He was a wonderful crafter of insults, as well.

"If you gave Falwell an enema, you could bury him in a matchbox."

Fantastic.

So you're asked what he stands for, yet you choose to ignore the writing he has created over the last 30 years on politics and social issues and instead go for religion, something which he has barely written on at all. In fact, you choose to go for only the stuff seen in his videos... you're probably one of these people too lazy to read anything so you just watch videos.

Yeh, and you're probably one of those people we should all feel inferior to because you lots of read books.

No, I wasn't asked what he stands for actually. And yes, I chose only to go on the stuff seen in his videos in the half line description I chose to write. If you really want somebody to summarise his literary works it might be more constructive to do it yourself, rather than wetting yourself because I didn't. And I read lots of books just haven't got round to his ones yet.

Wow, nice logic... I criticise you for basing a summary of a writer on a couple of youtube videos, and you, through some unimaginable chain of reasoning, deduce that I'm actually looking down on those who don't read lots of books. No, I think it's quite clear that I was saying a brief summary of a writer should be based on -y'know- their writing?

(Note, this isn't aimed at anyone in this thread, it's just my view, based on witnessing some disgusting reactions by Theocrats today)

It really didn't take long for delusional theocrats to appear and declare Hitchens' death as punishment by the almighty God. And that now, Hitchens is suffering and burning in eternal hellfire. Such evil smugness, eloquently, although unintentionally, displays the delusion, wickedness and stupidity that inhabits the minds of men, who ferociously fight to protect bronze age myths and their own delusions. As Hitchens himself stated many times, Religion does provide encouragement, to otherwise good people, to say and do, evil and profoundly stupid things.

Belief in Square-Circles..

For thousands of years, the Church of square-circles has indoctrinated populaces all over the world, spreading its doctrine of the square-circle through continents, always dipping it's fingers in more pies, always gathering more followers. The chances of you being born in a geographic area with communities that are highly influenced by the Church of square-circles is extremely high.

You were (un)lucky enough to be born into such an area. Once you come to an age of understanding, you are told that you are inherentely sinful. By a man blessed by the square-circle at the Church of square-circles or perhaps by another pillar of your community. Your friends, your friends parents, your parents, your grandparents, your great-grand parents, your great-great grandparents, everyone in your community was told exactly what you're told from birth.

You were told about the square-circle and it's amazing exploits, its love for you and the gift it will bestow upon you; the after life, a place of great joy, without any of the negative aspects of present earthly life and even a chance to meet the square-circle! Wonderful right? Ah but there's a catch. You must profess to abide to the laws set by the square circle, you most profess resolute faith in the square-circle and his doctrines, as the square circle is the only one who can break the sinful shackles you are born into, only the square circle can remove the sinful tattoo that is inherintely grafted into your soul.

The square circle listens to your every word and thought, he watches your every move, he judges your every action. If the square circle does not approve of your actions, if you cease to believe in the square circle.. he's got a special place just for you. A special place of death, destruction, torture, agony, fire, hatred and anguish! It's probably best to do what the square-circle wants. It may be emotional and psychological black mail, but you would do anything to avoid that place. You were also told about about those people who do not believe in square-circles or even worse, those that believe in a different square-circle! How could that be? They must know the square-circle will send them to that horrible place of death, destruction, torture, agony, fire, hatred and anguish!

You were told that if you do not profess supreme faith in the square-circle, you cannot live a moral and just life, you would be destined to live a petty life guided by sin, you would be guaranteed a spot in that place of death, destruction, torture, agony, fire, hatred and anguish! Thus, your faith remained strong.

Once you became a young adult, you left your community and went of to the big world. Once in the big world, you were exposed to rational arguments you've never heard before! You met plenty of non-believers who lived moral and just lives! How is that possible? Don't they know they're going to hell!!! After a year or so of being exposed to rational arguments and contrary experiences, you began to doubt your faith in the square-circle. You were in a crisis of faith, you didn't want to go to that place of death, destruction, torture, agony, fire, hatred and anguish! You were warned about losing faith. You tried and tried, but you couldn't shake the doubt. One of your non-believer friends asked if you read the book of square-circles yourself, the real version, not the version for children. A 'real' version? what? I've never heard of that!

So you began reading the 'real' version over several months. You were astounded! Was the square-cricle really benevolent and loving like I was told? Why did he slaughter entire cites? Why did he make his follower murder his own son? Why did he approve of slavery? Why did he call for genocide? Why did he command the slaughter of Children? Why did he condone the rape of women? Is this really the same square-circle? Ah, but it was! Suddenly after years and years, everything began to make sense. You realised you were living a lie.

When you visited your old community, you could not bare to announce your un-belief. What would they think of me? what would they do to me? Ah! but at least you were lucky enough to be born in this day and age! if this was a few hundred years ago, your punishment would of been death. You eventually gathered the courage to tell everyone. There were profound consequences. The majority of your friends abandoned you, the majority of the community shunned you, all of them looked at you with pity. They knew you were destined for Hell. Your family were devastated, they tried to persuade you to believe in the square-circle again! However, you couldn't bring yourself to believe something that isn't true!

The above may be a thought experiment but it is ripped directly from reality. Hitchens, saved many lives, he really did. I may strongly disagree with his political views, but that's nature. Show me two people who can agree on absolutely everything. Even the religions that dictate absolute doctrines are incapable of doing so.

There is a long intellectual battle ahead. Thankfully, the hegemony of religions and superstition is in decline, not a dramatic decline, but it is happening. We are approaching a tipping point. The tipping point could be attributed to the fearlessness and intellect of Christopher Hitchens and many others who have managed to inspire many, many people to abandon the square-circle.

With the loss Hitchens, the world is a little more stupid today.

Farewell Mr Hitchens, you will be missed.

He wasn't just a writer.

He was. Writers generally engage in public speaking almost as a matter of course, so you can hardly argue that this was a separate endeavour. Similarly, the activism fits into being both a writer and a human being.
Surely those religious people who take pleasure in his death only have themselves to blame for any hate that came to them from Hitchens, if we were to live as God called us then maybe he and many other would have been saved

This is the first time I've genuinely been upset in years. Loved ya Hitch! This world of religion-induced hatred, bigotry, ignorance, oppression, and absurdity feels a lot more depressing now that you have left it.

You have an amazing life

no, it is comments like those that generate hatred. there sure are people who don't care that much about his death or "take pleasure" as you claim, but that exists as well on the opposite side of the atheists. so i ask why fixate only on the negative people who spread hatred. if good exists then so will always bad as well, the only difference between them is which path you take, are you going to just acknowledge the negative people? because that is going to make you one of them as well, you probably dont see it but the opposite side of the good people do. i am a believer in God by the way, and by no means hate him but respect the good atheists who bring reason rather than hatred.

my life is fine. I just had no idea you were trying to be funny.
Used to be a good Socialist then defected to America and pandered to W Bush's Neo-Con crowd, supporting the Iraq war, Israel and the torture of detainees. Agreed with him on his stance on religion and he was a great orator (though George Galloway smoked him on a debate about the Iraq War). RIP anyway.
