Nigeria polio vaccinators shot dead in Kano

BBC News
Nine female polio vaccinators have been killed in two shootings at health centres in northern Nigeria, police have told the BBC.

In the first attack in Kano the polio vaccinators were shot dead by gunmen who drove up on a motor tricycle.

Thirty minutes later gunmen targeted a clinic outside Kano city as the vaccinators prepared to start work.

Some Nigerian Muslim leaders have previously opposed polio vaccinations, claiming they could cause infertility.

On Thursday, a controversial Islamic cleric spoke out against the polio vaccination campaign, telling people that new cases of polio were caused by contaminated medicine.

Such opposition is a major reason why Nigeria is one of just three countries where polio is still endemic.

But this is believed to be the first time polio vaccinators have been attacked in the country.

Some Kano residents told the BBC's Yusuf Yakasai in the city that other people injured in the first attack had been taken to hospital.

A health official confirmed to the BBC that those killed in the second attack in Hotoro were female health workers - there were earlier reports that people waiting at the clinic may have been among those shot.

Witnesses in Hotoro told the BBC gunmen also approached the health centre using a motor tricycle.

Analysts believe the attacks may have been the work of the militant Islamist group Boko Haram but it has not yet commented and no group has said it carried out the attack.

The group - whose name translates as "Western education is forbidden" - says it is fighting to overthrow the government and impose Sharia.

It has been blamed for the deaths of some 1,400 people in central and northern Nigeria since 2010.

According to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, there were 121 cases of polio in Nigeria last year, compared to 58 in Pakistan and 37 in Afghanistan.

In the past month, polio workers have also been targeted and killed in Pakistan, where the Taliban have threatened anti-polio efforts - accusing health workers of working as US spies and alleging that the vaccine makes children sterile.

The Republic of Cuba condemns the shootings, and offer their condolences to the victims' families.

The State of Eritrea believe that this should be a wake-up call to other vaccination charities in Africa that the people do not want to constantly be supported by other countries.
Canada offers its condolences to the victims' families and friends and condemns the shootings.

Canada is shocked at Eritrea's complete disregard for the goodwill of these charities, who are working tirelessly to make the citizens of countries like Nigeria, healthier. Canada also believes that Eritrea does not speak for the whole of the African continent.

The State of Eritrea would like to pose the question to Canada, and other delegations in support of their statement; what would you do if organisations such as Christian Aid and the like, supported by stepped into your country and started giving out medicine to your citzens? Eritrea believes that charities committed to this are in fact further worsening the aims for Africa to be self-sufficient. We also believe that some charities do not understand the cultures of the country's citizens.

The Swiss Confederation, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Republic of India all condemn these abhorrent attacks and we hope that those who did this face their appropriate sentences. The Swiss Confederation also condemns the abhorrent statement by the Eritrean representative, as a wealthy country the Swiss Confederation has little need of charitable vaccinations for our citizens. We call for the Eritrean representative to withdraw or at least amend their statement.

Australia condemns these thoughtless murders, and hopes that the charities will continue their tireless work towards improving the health of the African nations.

OOC: If the governments of the countries provided the vaccines to their citizens instead of being corrupt to the core, then there would be no need for the charities

Tuvalu is saddened at the deaths of people who only wished to save lives. We sincerely hope that this violence ends, and that polio can, at last, be eradicated.

The Netherlands echoes the sentiments of Tuvalu, and is shocked that people would want to kill people who wanted to help people, as if the people against the vaccinations truly wanted the best for their people, they should realise that it is the peoples' choice to attend these clinics.
