my predictions (i was right about lots in 3b paper) -

no nationalism essay, but 15 marks .. conservative nationalism... nationalism/racialism or if they're feeling mean and ask one that's never been asked before: why are nation states in decline?

feminism - something along the lines of "there are liberal feminists, socialist feminists and radical feminists, but no conservative feminists"

multiculturalism (defo gonna come up as it didn't in jan) - is multiculturalism dead?
something about multiculturalism/liberalism

ecologism - this is definitely going to come up as it didn't in june 2012, idk about essays as i haven't looked at em yet but im thinking anthropocentrism/ecocentrism for 15 mark

((i hope this doesnt now jinx the exam))

That feminism question about Conservative Feminists won't come up as a 15 marker I think - it's too broad for a 15 marker.

i meant it would come up as a 45 marker

do you reckon a question like 'is multiculturalism a single doctrine' will come up?
They have never asked it so i don't know if that means they never will, or it makes it even more likely they will this time around.

i'm so unprepared!

Heywood describes it as an 'ideological space for debate' but I think that question is a bit too sketchy to be asked. I mean, the only strand that really interlinks with it not being a single doctrine is Liberal Multiculturalism.

Same here for being unprepared!

thank goodness that puts my mind at ease. Foolishly i only learnt essay plans for nationalism and multiculturalism and it looks like nationalism wont come up and i hope they don't throw a curve ball for multiculturalism

I have to say that this is the exam that I am looking forward to the least. The ideologies are so complex and 'un-regimented' that I'm finding it difficult to take in anything during revision. I pretty much know an essay plan for the Nationalism forward/backward looking ideology, and also a Nationalism single doctrine, but not entirely sure about the others.

the essay plan for is it a forward/backwards looking can be applied to if it is aggressive/peaceful.
backwards=aggressive
forwards= peaceful

and if you know the single doctrine plan then you are set for nationalism!

Lets hope it comes up!

Not necessarily:

Expansionist Nationalism - Looks forward in that it's chauvinistic imperialism and the future conquerors of inferior nations/races.

Conservative Nationalism - peaceful but it looks backwards at National independence, national leaders etc. as a way of creating a National patronage to secure social cohesion, which creates peace.

I have my fingers crossed, but I think it is unlikely
Lots of people here seem to be hoping for a nationalism 45 marker. As nice as it would be due to it's limited selection of possible 45 markers, it's extremely unlikely. I'm personally hoping on a nice 45 marker on ecologism otherwise feminism, they seem the clearest to me whilst i find multiculturalism to be far more blurred!

Yeah I completely agree with you - but I think that this exam is going to be very difficult seeing as the 3B exam was relatively nice in my opinion. I think Holism might come up as a 15 marker, and for the multiculturalism one it'll be something like Multiculturalism and social cohesion.

any idea on feminist 15 markers?

Hmm I'm not too sure on feminist 15 markers because they can kinda ask absolutely anything, but I have a feeling there might be one on the difference between androgyny and essentialism, or maybe the key ideas behind liberal feminism, possibly even stuff about redefining the political.

I have a feeling that Holism might come up for Ecologism, don't know why though.

Hope it does, would be a good one and the main thinker I can remember is Fritjof Capra who advocated holism.

Yeah these questions could all come up; I wouldn't expect one on patriarchy and its importance purely as it came up in January.

I've revised all past papers for all 4 today and the worst is by far multiculturalism.

Yeah, it could be something like "why have ecologists advocated holism?" in which case you just define holism, and then talk about the shallow ecologist belief in limited holism and then take it a step further in talking about the deep ecologist commitment to holism. Then throw in the Capra idea about the overthrowing of the 'Cartesian-Newtonian Paradigm'

Yeah that is true, to be honest though sometimes they recur the questions - but if it came up in January I wouldn't expect it to be repeated this soon,

I've been revising past papers for the past few days and none of them are pretty. I'm thinking maybe a Multiculturalism 15 marker on Minority Rights?

Is that paradigm about man's dominion over nature? Limited holism is virtually anthropocentrism yeah?

No, the paradigm is Capra's term for looking at the world in a mechanistic way. He basically says that you can't view the world in parts like you would in a mechanistic society because of holism - you can't study individual parts because they all contribute to the whole. Capra says that with the overthrowing of this paradigm, humans will look at the world in a more holistic way.

Yeah, modernist ecologists believe in anthropocentric values, which is shown through limited holism because although the world is a whole, this can be used to further human needs and interests by the study of the environment and the whole environment can be used for human needs.

1 Explain the link between multiculturalism and liberalism.

2 Define patriarchy, and explain its importance to feminist analysis.

3 Why and how have nationalists viewed the nation-state as a political ideal?

4 Explain the key ideas of eco-feminism.

5 On what grounds have multiculturalists defended diversity?

SECTION B

6 ‘Feminism is characterised more by disagreement than by agreement.’ Discuss.

7 To what extent is nationalism a forward-looking doctrine?

8 ‘Ecologism is fundamentally at odds with capitalism and its values.’ Discuss.

Thanks

Hmm, the feminism one is sort of a 'to what extent is it a coherent ideology' type question - annoying because I'm hoping for something like that to come up this time round.

I need a high D in this unit to maintain my A for university and I'm ****ting myself
