Help: F324 confusing question

Hi guys,
chemistry.JPG

The June 2012 paper, Question 3C(i). Looking at this question I thought the functional groups could have been : Carbonyl, ester and alcohol (hydroxyl).

However, the mark scheme gives you marks for ONLY : ester , alcohol (not hydroxyl)

Why is this? Surely C=O is a functional group and surely you could call an alcohol group a hydroxyl group?

Any response is appreciated.

Hydroxyl and carbonyl are not themselves used as functional group descriptors, per se; they are viewed as building blocks for other functional groups. (So for example, a hydroxyl bonded to a carbonyl carbon gives you a carboxylic acid. You would then only state the carboxylic acid as the functional group, as the hydroxyl and carbonyl descriptors are less specific and therefore redundant.)
