Italy in chaos as grand coalition crumbles because all Berlusconi's ministers resign. Budget was not passed meaning essential cuts will not come into effect, their debt is close to passing the danger level.

New elections now look inevitable as Letta promised any quitting would result in his resignation

Welcome to Italy
It's a very complicated situation.
The Italian system is not straightforward, new elections are not sure at all: even if Letta was to resign.

it is a complicated system but because the election was so evenly split in the chamber between the three parties the only way Letta can stop an election is to now form a coalition with the five star movement even with every other party he cannot get a majority only five star and this will never happen as they want euro referendum and massive reforms. They must be hoping to hold an election and one get near a majorit

nope

with the current election law it is 99% sure that noone will get a majority.

anyway the problem is that the President of the Republic needs to stop the activity of the Parliament.
Noone can force him to do it.

What could happen is that the President resigns (he threatened to do that) and then the Parliament would have to elect a new one before having new elections: good luck with that!!!

Berlusconi seems to have about a million political lives he seems to have outmanouvered all of his enemies again and is looking like the resignation will save his senate seat and given the state of the economy under the left his party may do better than the spring election, one thing you can say about bunga bunga man is that he is a survivor

It is a bad situation. But, as Alfissti said, "Welcome to Italy".
For this mess You could blame history, the fact that Italy has never been( and definately isn't now) united. Till not long ago, (about 1918) Italy didn't exist, there were only little states with they're own rules and kings, bickering and rioting non stop. Then, when they were "forced" to become one big state, this situation didn't change. Italy still is a mass of little countries. Every region founds its own little society instead of getting together and founding one big one that encompasses everyone. So instead of getting anything done, everyone sits around complaining (another typical trait of Italy) and not doing anything about it.
so before you can try and find a solution to the country's politics, you have to tackle the ones that rise in the singular regions.
in my opinion that is the only way you can get something done. but it won't happen anytime soon, unfortunately.
