Dissertation for Politics and International Relations

Hi, I'm studying BA Politics and International Relations and am in second year. I've just started second semester of the second year and have come across a compulsory module called 'Political Research', in this we are being forced to research this mysterious thing called a dissertation. I have no idea what a dissertation is and have no idea what to research. Can anyone clarify what a dissertation is and advise on what sorts of things I can base my dissertation on?
