What is the difference between a timed essay and an exam?

Are they not basically the same thing?
Are you allowed notes for the timed essay? I know that there are open book exams, but that seems like it could be the obvious difference?

I was reading the description of a timed essay that my potential uni has given and it seems that you can make notes but not take them in. The subject is History if that helps.
At my uni, a timed essay would mean that you get the question in advance and prepare the essay to re-write from memory within that time given. An exam, you obviously don't see beforehand.

When i studied in the Netherlands, an exam usually consisted of 4 questions (each requiring about 500 - 750 words) then a 1500 word essay on a 5th 'essay question'

Thank God I'm back in the UK where 90% of my assessments are course work lol
