Want to see somebody about anxiety but who? Anybody who's had counselling etc help?

My anxiety is ruining my life and I want to see somebody. I last saw the school counsellor which was free and confidential and pretty easy. But I left school 9 years ago and haven't seen anybody since. I just want somebody to talk to.

My problem is that I don't trust the health service. The other day when applying for travel insurance, I got asked if I had ever suffered from anxiety. Luckily I could answer no because I have never seen a doctor about anxiety, depression etc. I know if I had answered yes they would have slapped on a premium for it. My dad also had life insurance refused because he had seen the doctor about depression and alcohol dependence. Basically I'm not willing to let my anxiety be held against me by companies and be charged money for it.

So I want to see somebody privately but the problem is I don't even know where to start. Initial consultations cost about £70 - which is a lot of money to risk on somebody I've never met who might turn out not to be right for me. I'm also not sure about all the different terms and qualifications (counsellor? psychotherapist? NLP? CBT?) mean and what is a professional qualification as opposed to what anybody can get after taking an evening class?

Has anybody had counselling or similar privately? How did you find the person? How did you find the experience? Thanks in advance
If you can't afford the money for a counselor, you can always read on this forum about the experiences of TSR users with anxiety. You can even share your own experience. You're anonymous, so don't worry about anyone reading what you wrote and trying to use it against you.

(tbh those who have suffered anxiety before may be of more help than a counselor who may never have experienced it before)

Visit the website, Psychologytoday.com. You will find a list of qualified counsellors there usually with their qualifications listed. You then have to find out what the qualifications mean and how these qualifications would normally be obtained. Then you have to look at what their particular specialisms are and then pick a counsellor that seems to tick all the boxes that you require to be ticked. Then you can go for an initial consultation. £80-100 per hour is small change when you are trying to really turn your life around! Think of what you could gain!
