If you hydrolyse methyl benzoate what 2 products would you get? Now think which of these might react with the alkaline catalyst.

Work out what the final products would be and then think how you could make benzoic acid from it (hint think acids and bases).

Acid hydrolysis. Otherwise you get a salt if you use a base. Dilute warm HCL will do the trick. HCl is a catalyst water is what's added. Products are an alcohol and the carboxylic acid. Not a clue about purification to be honest.
