Theoretical Physics course help

First off, I wasn't too sure where to post this, ie: physics or maths, so my apologies if it's in the wrong forum.

Ok so I'm a 6th year leaving cert student in Ireland, and I've applied for several physics courses in the UK and Ireland. I'd like to get peoples opinions on a few questions I've got.

1) Which of these theoretical physics courses would be better and why? ? Queens University Belfast, Trinity College Dublin or Edinburgh University?

2) I've applied for the natural sciences course in UCL (guidance counsellor insisted it was better for me, despite my insistence that I wanted to study theoretical physics). Is their theoretical physics course good? And would you recommend I change my application to the course? They invited me to the college and the admissions tutor for natural sciences said it would be possible so what are your opinions?

3) Would you recommend me applying to any European universities through Eunicas? I know my choice of undergrad course isn't as important as post grad but I'd just like your opinions.

I know this is pretty long but I'd really appreciate your answers. Thanks

1) It depends on several factors. Would you prefer going to a rather close by located very good university or would you sacrifice that to study at Edinburgh University. If you were to judge based on University league tables then Edinburgh surpasses them both. If you still want to stay in Ireland and study at a very respected University, then I would suggest Queen's Belfast.

2) I'm not too sure. I would assume it's down to whether or not you want to specialise as a theoretical physicist or would want to cater for all 'natural sciences'.

3) I'm not sure as I haven't applied anywhere else apart from UK universities.

I'm planning to study Physics as well. I'm from London and have made Queen's Belfast as my Firm choice and Exeter as my backup. I personally liked QUB university and the campus and see myself studying there.

Thanks for your response. I'm just curious as to what appeals to you about Queens? I've never visited it, despite the fact that my dad lives within twenty minutes of the Campus 😂

Firstly, the entry requirements were realistic. QUB position in the University league tables were higher than the universities I applied to such as QMUL. The offer I received was one grade lower than a few of the universities I applied to, which caught my attention since one grade is a massive amount of less stress. I liked the campus, facilities and just the sense of independence as being from London you can expect the city life to be quite chaotic at times.

The Physics course itself was where the university really intrigued me as I would learn my favourite modules earlier on whereas in some of the universities they are your 2nd/3rd year modules. I liked the weighting of assessment from the University which I've kept in mind as I'm planning on studying for a MSc .*. I would need a 2:1 in my bachelor degree. The only reason why I put QUB as my Firm is because of the single fact that the modules I'm really passionate about are taught early in your First year whereas in Exeter your taught it during your Second year.

I'm considering to attend an open day once the June exams are over so I can gain a sense of the atmosphere + learn more about the surroundings such as day to day life.

For the time being, QUB is my Firm choice but its subject to my open day visit post-exams.

Hahah, lucky you.

I never considered the course from the perspective of what modules are when... Thanks again for your opinion

On a side note, I'm sure you'll love Belfast. It's nothing like London for culture and facilities (maybe I'm slightly biased, having spent a lot of my life around there). That said there's a great atmosphere in the city, especially if you're looking for less of a busy place than London (although it's always full of people, especially today for last minute gift buyers but that's a different story :') )

Anyway, good luck with your application and maybe I'll meet you in a physics course in Queens someday

Anyway,

Haha, thanks

Hopefully one day and then we can recall back to this thread
