How are you op?

Annoyed a bit.

I only say it if I'm genuinely interested in how the other person is feeling, otherwise I'll just say 'Hi', 'Hello', or the more colloquial 'What's up?' or 'How you doing?'

Same, quite the same.
Just a sign of good will, is all

Feel free to join. It's better to be in a room with three than two.

Who mentioned social anxiety?

May I remind you that interaction online can be a lot different to face to face interaction

I can't help but wonder, do they ask out of being polite or do they want to talk? I realise that may be silly thing to ask.
You'll have to work that out from the context, body language and intonation.

I don't think it's a useless cliche at all. I care about how people feel, so when I ask it, I'm not just asking it to be polite. Even though it's simple it can open the door to a meaningful conversation.

Same here, when I ask "how are you", I actually want to know how they have been. Especially if it's someone I know well and haven't caught up with properly for few weeks. I also answer honestly, so my responses vary from good, not too bad, bit ill or even great!
