why do third wave feminists look down on women who aren't

like ok, I don't feel the need to be unnecessarily angry about imaginary prejudices, it doesn't mean you can be so condescending and aggressive towards me. i am constantly harassed about this apparent 'wage gap' and 'rape culture' that plagues me. I know for a fact that the wage gap is due to many reasons aside from 'sexism', and I for one believe, at least in the West, that 'rape culture', which would insinuate rape is celebrated, does not exist to the point where it could be deemed a culture

Edit- literally all feminists who are 'arguing' with me are being ad hominem and proving my point

Personally I don't like the word 'feminist'; I think gender equality is a much better way of putting it. However I think some people who are feminists look down on those who aren't feminists because as a woman why would you want to be treated inferior to men, just because you are a different gender.

Instead of saying 'third wave feminists are condescending and aggressive' etc I think its more appropriate to say 'some people who believe in third wave feminism are...' and therefore avoiding stereotyping.

And you're entitled to your own opinions; if people can't respect those their not worth your time.

Oh and I think rape culture exists, but perhaps culture isn't the right word for it.

I thoroughly agree with what you are saying.

I used to go to an all girls school and I was completely hounded and harassed when I stated I was not a feminist, even when I presented what I felt were fully justified reasons.

edit: I don't identify as a feminist but I do identify as an egalitarian :smile:

You're constantly harassed about the wage gap? Who is harassing you? Tell them that you understand their view but you don't agree and wish to leave it at that. If they don't stop then report them if the harassment is taking place at a school or university or work place etc.

If it's online then block the person.

Feminists are all different kinds of people. Some are jerks.
Some are great.
And all the shades either side and inbetween.

You're allowed to disagree. Just don't expect not to have a debate about it if you bring it up :P people are allowed to disagree with you too. As long as everything is constructive then there shouldn't be an issue, correct?

I am a feminist and have received rape threats just for identifying as one. Even though I think being a feminist is a positive thing I do not look down on others for choosing not to be one or treat them any differently.

first and second wave feminism were respectable causes that were truly about gender equality.
third wave feminism is a mess.

I used to be a feminist, particularly because as a woman, it was expected that I support feminism because all women, will do, or will have at one point of their life. Feminism for me, isn't what feminism used to be. Feminism should be supporting women, but not oppressing men at the same time. We should support everyone in society, instead loads of feminists feel the need to judge a woman because she's showing off cleavage.. it is rather crazy... there are much bigger issues they could tackle as feminists but they choose to attack the small things.

second wave feminism got women the vast majority of legal rights such as marital rights etc
the difference between these and third wave feminism is that first and 2nd had clear cut, real goals. third wave feminism is just a mesh of coagulated man hatred

I would call myself a feminist as I believe in gender equality and that is the textbook definition of feminism, however I do believe that there are many people who also call themselves feminists but are condescending and aggressive unnecessarily. This small minority of people have probably been the most vocal due to their strong views which has unfortunately created the notion that all feminists are like this which has the unwanted side effect of people seeing feminism as a mainly aggressive and bad movement. Whereas in reality me and most feminists are really just fighting for equality and want to do so in a way which doesn't attacks and marginalises anybody. So yes I can see where the OP is coming from but at the same time I think everyone needs to see that there isn't smoke without fire and whilst the wage gap isn't solely due to sexism, having increased gender equality within the work place would go some way to eradicating it. As for rape culture, I do agree that culture isn't perhaps the best word to use as it does promote positive connotations.

Women got equal rights now. There are a lot of other groups who are harder oppressed than women at the moment, but get no attention whatsoever. Feminism isn't needed here anymore.
