Counselling

Do you think counsellors who work in professional mental healthcare are there for a reason, maybe from past experiences etc? OR do you think they are there because they are professionally qualified to do the job? I find counselling very strange, people can advise you but you have to make your own decisions at the end of the day therefore whats the difference between speaking to a counsellor and speaking to somebody on the street/in a shop/in a bar?!
Counselors have trained for the job; they understand behavioral patterns, thought processes, can identity causes to mental health symptoms etc better than a friend or family member. Whilst the latter will support you because they love you, the former will support you because they can (hopefully) steer you in a direction which will help you overcome whatever obstacles you are facing.

As for their reasoning behind it, it could be many things. It could be purely for financial gain, for example, but more often than not it's because they genuinely care for others and want to do some good in the world. Yes, their previous experiences may also be another reason for their career choice.

Thank you. Maybe its best to ask people before you speak to them about what qualifications they have. I kind of like the Madonna song 'beautiful strangers' because it feels better talking to people and spilling the beans who don't know you and its easier rather than develop a relationship with somebody.
