English and Creative Writing at Surrey

Hi, I'm a student from Barcelona and I was thinking of applying to Surrey even though I have some questions that being an international student are difficult to answer.

-as for the uni: How is the accomodation like? How is the social life like? Is it easy to find a job in town or do most people commute to other places? Are there career options in the artistic field (music/film)?

-if anyone has done/is doing english and creative writing: How is the teaching like? Is there an option to get help if in academic difficulties? Is the feedback useful? What subjects are the most interesting/useful in your opinion?

-What makes this courses at Surrey different/better?

Hi @aranpascual :hello:

I've just messaged our student ambassadors to ask them to share some insight with you - I'll post their response here once I have it!

Hi again

Here is lots of information that our student ambassador Annie has kindly shared:

Accommodation: There are several different types of accommodation at the university: it’s organised by Bands A-F of ascending price, from shared rooms to your own studio flat. Bands C (with your own room but shared bathroom and kitchen facilities), and Band D (ensuite bedrooms with shared kitchen facilities) tend to be the most popular. The accommodation is split between two campuses, with a big supermarket in the middle, and there’s a shuttle bus service which runs between the two. All the rooms are self-catered, so it’s a good idea to learn to cook a few staple meals if you don’t spend much time in the kitchen.

Social life: There’s plenty of places to eat and socialise at the university, both on the campus or the town centre (which is only a 10 minute walk away). There are lots of bars, restaurants and nightclubs in town where you can meet up with your friends. Monday night is the Student night in tow, and there are events at Rubix (the nightclub on campus) every Wednesday and Friday. I’d recommend having a look at the Students' Union Facebook page to see the events they organise for students, including day trips to the other parts of the U.K. and also the sports clubs and societies, many of whom organise their on social events.

Employment: The places in town are also a great employment opportunity for part-time work: you’re unlikely to have more than 15 contact hours a week, and so as long as you’re organised you will be able to fit in work around your studies. Many of the shops and restaurants are happy to offer contracts to students, and then are even places to work on the campus, such as Starbucks. Unitemps is a recruitment agency on the campus who regularly post adverts for local job offers. Our careers service at the university can also help you by offering mock interviews if you secure one for a part-time job. Likewise, they can offer guidance about the career you may wish to pursue.

We have a careers fair on campus, where employers, including those from the Arts industries, look to recruit Surrey students. We also have links to placement years in these industries, and online resources to help you achieve the job you would like to have.

Academic support: The academics in the department are brilliant and very approachable - you will be assigned a personal tutor (one of your first year academics) to whom you can go to with any queries or difficulties you encounter during the entirety of your degree. They can also organise peer mentoring from older students in your department. You will often receive in-depth and timely feedback on your assignments - it’s all done electronically and you don’t need to produce hand-written essays, other than in exam conditions. Here’s a full list of the modules on offer:

As the years progress, you will be able to choose more modules and shape your degree to the topics which interest you most. Likewise, you can select modules which have an assessment pattern that will suit you best.

Surrey is very welcoming as a university and there’s so much going. For example you have the option to learn a language for free alongside your degree, through the Global Graduate Award. It’s not as bustling as one in the centre of London for example, but it’s a great spot to travel around and I’ve really felt like part of the community of Guildford, and not just a student, during my time here.
