Oh, okay, misunderstood you and was about to open up a can of whup ass

actually what you quoted before and said is true for the majority of the cases

If there was a good state school in the area I'd send them there, but I went to a private primary school and it was brilliant; I came out year ahead of everyone else my age and so did most of the other students. However, I was also completely socially inept simply because it was such a small school and quite strict, so I never had any experience of someone being nasty to me for any reason! So if I did send them to a private school, I may have to force them to go to sports clubs and things just to make sure that they actually socialised.

You can learn to be well rounded and meet all types of people in other environments such as jobs, community centers or other hobbies. The statistics show a higher proportion of children do better/go into higher education than from state schools, so why not? What else would i need to waste my money on when i could improve my child/their life?
Someone can learn to be modest/not a snob.

Okay, well now I take issue.

It might be the case that it is true for the majority of cases, but that is actually the worst reason for public schooling I think I've ever heard. Just because its true most of the time, it doesn't mean it should be - if anything, it's an argument against public schooling because without this public schooling there wouldn't be such a clear-cut class division in the first place.

You make good points that kind of thing does sound quite fun. However would you not think it would be a bit odd to make the decision to have children and then ship them off to boarding school for the best part of their childhood. It would feel like you were missing out on interaction with your kids somewhat. Unless of course you decided they were annoying little ****s and didn't want to see them!

Yeah I know what you mean, personally I was a 'day student' meaning I went home to my family at night time, but I was a weekly boarder for a while. I think that going to boarding school does make you more independent, and prepares kids more for uni life, and leaving home. I guess its all due to personal preference, but the reason I stayed at boarding school was because my family has been moving around the world ever since I was born. Staying at one school gave me more stability, and I made the best friends I've ever had. However, I now live in Malaysia as I left my old school and I think its one of the worst decisions i've ever made. Even though I'm at another private school it's nowhere near as good. Therefore I think that all 'private schools' cannot be generalised, just because a school is private, doesn't mean its necessarily a good school.
why teach good working class kids to have ideas above their station ?
they should be looking at manuyal labor or a trade, not all this private school rubbish and university nonsense

mine wasnt good enough.. its ****ing ****

they arent all toffs at private schools though, massive overgeneralisation. youve always got idiots wherever you go in life, but in my opinion toffs are a lot better than all these gangsta types in state schools.

studing with ganstas means that you lern to cope with real life which is filled with gangstas. studying with topffs is s a waste of life. they are not real, they are plastic fake people.

But if, like I said, people weren't so selfish and tried to change the actual issue - the performance of state schools - instead of thinking "oh well, I'll send my little kiddiewinkle to this darling school and keep my head in the sand about all the other issues that don't affect me in particular" then state schools wouldn't underperform.

Not that I'm saying all of them do. I came from the worst state school in Leicester and I think I've turned out pretty well educated.

Yes because everyone is in a position to change the world. People can only change their own world.
I absolutely would send my children to a private school if I could easily afford it. If I found we'd have to sacrifice certain luxuries at home then I wouldn't. Thinking about it, perhaps I would like to organise home tutoring sessions if they were really struggling. What I know for certain is that they'll go to a state primary school and then I think I'd let them make an informed decision about whether or not they'd like to go to a private or state secondary.

Fair enough, but how many of these state schoolers have the same aspirations as the private school kids and their teachers really don't care at the end of the day. Not many of them dream of getting into a good university such as Imperial, Cambridge from what i've seen and it's generally seen as 'odd' to want to go to university full stop. Now when you're in an enviroment like that and you're intelligent enough to perform and get into a top university it isn't as easy as it is at a private/grammar school. Coming from a crap state school you should be able to relate to this yourself.

That's precisely the mentality that prevents the world from being changed.

I reckon it's a reflection on our society in general - as Westerners, we keep a very individualistic view of the world. Ergo, private schools, because some people think it's okay to just look after number one.

I totally agree, but I'm saying therein lies the problem. It's because public schools exist that people aren't putting enough pressure on the government. If public schools were abolished tomorrow and all the middle to upper class kids in public schools had to go to a state school, you can bet your sweet bippy there'd be heads rolling in Number 10.

I'm saying I wouldn't want to endorse a system which allows for this selfish mentality to continue unchecked.

I could equally say that I wouldn't send my kids to a state school because it seems so "working class" to me, and I'd hate for them to turn into lower class derelicts.

Clearly, both my statement and yours are wrong. Don't be so quick to generalise based on your own limited experience.

Dont say my opinion is wrong, it is an OPINION. My partner was privately educated and pretty much had everything put on a plate for him. If I have a child, I dont want to give the message that pots of money is the key to a good education and a good future. Hard work and a good teacher is.
