A car of mass 800 kg is using a chain to tow a trailer of mass 200 kg along a straight horizontal road. The engine of the car produces a driving force of 1.5kN.

Find the acceleration of the system and the tension in the chain assuming that there is no resistance to motion.

Draw a labelled force diagram and resolve horizontally, using f=ma, for the car and caravan. You should be able to cancel T between the two equations to find the acceleration. Finding the tension is then simple.
If you're still having trouble with it, let me know and i'll post a solution.

A car of mass 800 kg is using a chain to tow a trailer of mass 200 kg along a straight horizontal road. The engine of the car produces a driving force of 1.5kN.

Find the acceleration of the system and the tension in the chain assuming that there is no resistance to motion.

For the car:
1500 - T = 800a
---> T = 1500 - 800a

For the trailer:
T = 200a

Equating the expressions for T gives:
---> 1500 - 800a = 200a
---> 1500 = 1000a
---> Acceleration (System) = 1.50 ms^-2

Tension (Chain) = 200(1.50) = 300 N
