What is student life like at Aberdeen uni?

I’m in S5 exploring different possible undergraduate courses and am considering Aberdeen as an option, I’d love to hear from actual students what the life is like. Thanks:smile:)
Location: The campus is situated in Old Aberdeen, it's a beautiful part of the city that has a number of old buildings in it, a church with really nice stained glass windows and a really nice and spacious courtyard that is usually chocked full of people relaxing (pre-covid). Intertwined with all of that is the Sir Duncan Rice Library, which looks like something out of Star Wars but it's a nice looking building and a believe a highly respected library too. The Uni also has a Law Library, if law is of interest to you and I believe it is one of the best stocked in the UK.

Course/Module Choice: There are a number of courses to pick from, singular, joint and so on. There would be plenty to choose from both as your course and as modules once you are in, if credits allow. I personally have taken a number of course not linked to my degree when I've had spare credits to spend and they have been really good. Most are interdisciplinary so you have the opportunity to build up a range of experience in different areas.

Lecturers: I can only attest for the lecturers I have had but all-in-all I've had a pleasant experience with the lecturers. They have all been passionate about what they are teaching and personally that helps me get more into the subject. Someones passion can be infectious in that regard, outside of that you will likely get a personal tutor while you are here who you would liaise with and they would help you with any issues you have. My personal tutor has been fantastic, they have really went above and beyond for me and I'm unsure if this would be the case had I went elsewhere. I've had a number of issues in both the teaching side and my personal life that I don't think I could have gotten over if it weren't for my personal tutor. Again, I can only attest for my experience but the lecturers at Aberdeen have been top notch.

Extra Curricular: There is easily over 50 societies to join, from focuses on music, art and the sports teams. There really is a lot to do, I also believe the uni is very accommodating to new societies if you feel you have a niche that needs to be filled. Outside of the uni there are a number of sports teams to join, the uni is close to an amazing gym with an olympic swimming pool, top grade running track and indoor athletic equipment which you can get discount on.

City: Aberdeen is Aberdeen, it's grey oh so grey. It would really depend on what you are after, I can't speak for the drinking or party scene as I'm just not interested in that. Outside of that there is a beach, there are a number of places you can walk to, there is your usually city things such as a theatre, cinema etc. there are a number gyms around the area and if you can drive or know someone, or are willing to get a bus or train we are close to the highlands which opens up a lot more to explore.

If you have any question feel free to ask, I don't use this much but I'll have a look back from time to time.

Wow, thank you so much that’s all so helpful! Sounds great and I’ll definitely have a further look into courses I might be interested in! Cheers.

What (in your opinion) is the best/ your favourite part/aspect of the uni?
and if you could change one thing about the uni, what would you change?

and if you could change one thing about the uni, what would you change?

My favourite aspect would be twofold, I first like how diverse the university is, I've met a lot of people from around the world in the courses I've done and I'm really interested in how people live elsewhere, their opinions on given topics and how it may be different because of their upbringing. Second, I like how many modules you can choose from if you have spare credits to spend, I study Law but outside of that I've managed to have modules in psychology, philosophy, divinity, food security and so on. I feel like these can help supplement your learning in a given field as well as bring something new and different to you schedule so you're not just learning one subject for 4 years.

As for what I would change, I don't think I would change much. I've been very grateful that my time at uni has gone well, I've had a number of personal issues throughout my studies but my personal tutor, the school department I'm part of and the wider uni administration have been extremely helpful. I could only imagine given how many staff members the uni has that there would be the chance of meeting people who are not has kind as this, and that would be the only thing I would change.

Do you know much about the hillhead accomodation?? Hoping to start uni in September so wondering which of the halls at hillhead are recommended? Are some definitely better than others for both living in and socialising?
