-Cu and +Cu - sign before element

What do these signs mean in front of this element (copper)? Here is the sentence "Application of dolomite highly suppressed soil N2O emissions in both +Cu and –Cu soils."

My interpretation would be +Cu is copper containing soil (positive for copper), whereas -Cu is soil without copper (negative for copper).
