Hi everyone,

We've got an exciting new opportunity for applicants starting next week: the next run of our free online "Essential Guide to University Life" course! Myself and some UoR staff will be running the program which is broken down into a 3-week structure to help you get a grip on the basics when it comes to starting a university degree.

The first 'week' focuses on deciding if university is right for you, a bit about student life, and making the most of other opportunities offered to you during your degree; the second addresses preparing for the move, looking after yourself, and teaching you some key skills such as budgeting; and the third is all about actually moving into your university accommodation and balancing commitments and personal life whilst at uni. It's worth noting that you are able to complete the course at your own pace, but the weekly format is there to help structure your learning.

You can find out all about it (and even enrol!) through this link, and if you have any questions, please let us know!

Hi! Im not so sure who to ask but I need help with something. I have received both offers from Henley Business School (Reading) and Bayes (Cass) Business School (City, London), for International business/management. I am very confused as to which one I prefer and would rather go to. I was wondering if anyone has any insight or thoughts about which one I should consider as my top option, because as of right now I honestly have no clue. please let me know!
Hey guys I’ve firmed Reading recently! Is anyone going to be commuting from London? Is getting an accom better than commute if I’m an hour away?

I haven't got an offer yet, but depending on the course intensity, I will either rent a room for Monday to friday in reading Or relocate to Reading for uni. It cost me around £45 to travel from London when I visited the Uni and the journey from door to door (Wandsworth to Reading) took a lot longer than I expected, almost 2hrs. I reckon I can cut 30 mins out next time but I really wouldn't want to do it 4/5days a week each way.

I think if you drove it might be easier to commute and building a good group of friends will also be great as they may allow you stay over sometimes if you're out socialising late.

If you don't mind commuting it's very do-able, but if the thought of getting on a bus/train, sitting and standing next to people make you anxious then it may be better to relocate at least for the first year.

Wow £45 for a day? Via the Elizabeth line it would only take me £12 a day, and an hour and a half commute. I don’t think I mind it but I feel like it’s going to get real boring real quick, plus I don’t want to miss out on socialising.
Would you be commuting then? Also good luck I hope you get an offer!

I went via Paddington on National Rail. I travelled November last year and Google didn't give the option of the Elizabeth line when I searched for tickets to Reading. I just double checked and the ticket was actually £55.20 for the open day return.haha I didnt want to be stressing about about catching a specific train. But thanks for mentioning the Elizabeth line. I'm going look into it as I can afford £12 a day if its faster.

Yeah i don’t know why google maps doesn’t always show it for me either but I do know someone who commutes there via the Elizabeth line. It does take more time than Paddington but since Paddington is further from me it doesn’t rlly make a difference they’re both around 1:30 hrs.
Are you planning to move to london and then commute?

Hey @anonymous

Firstly, congratulations on your offers - that's great news!

It's a big decision so totally normal to feel a bit unsure and it's good that you are considering it seriously. I think, ultimately, it comes down to personal preference on individual factors; weigh up all the pros and cons of both. Have you been to open days for both? If not, I'd definitely recommend going to an upcoming offer holder day (visit day) which you should have been emailed about, as this will give you a much better feel for life in Reading as well as the opportunity to ask questions and see your department.

Have a look at both courses and how they are structured. Take into account your learning style and the assessment style that suits you best, and look at how each course fits into that. Also consider the individual modules and where your interest lies - one may offer slightly different to the other, despite it being the same course. I don't doubt that you've already done your research, but just a couple of things to think about again!

Maybe think about where you think you would be happiest in terms of campus-life too! Would you prefer a campus or city university? This may play into your decision-making too.

Ultimately, it's up to you where you think you would be happiest and what factors are most important to you.

If there's anything specifically you'd like to know about the course at Reading or life in Reading in general, let us know - we'd be so happy to try and help!
