AQA A level biology paper 3 essay hack (?)

Hi, I was wondering whether or not you could write about the beyond spec information given in the paper 3 exam questions in the essay? For example, I was doing a past paper and question 2 was a comprehension type question about cancer and different treatments for it (it discussed mutations in a gene called NOTCH1 etc etc). In the essay could I talk about the different types of cancer and treatments using the NOTCH1 information to go beyond spec (assuming it is relevant to the title)? My biology teacher said that there is a possibility that the info given in the exam questions might all be made up (there may be no such thing as a NOTCH1 gene) so its not wise to use...
