No. Zinc isn’t a transition metal.
A transition metal is one capable of forming at least one stable ion with a part-filled d subshell.
The only stable ion zinc forms is Zn^2+, which has a full d subshell. Nickel forms Ni^2+, which has a partially filled d subshell
It’s weird that they put this in AS. A transition metal is an element that forms a stable ion with incomplete D orbitals. By this definition Zinc is NOT a transition metal as it forms a stable ion with full D orbitals. The same goes for Scandium as it forms a stable ion that doesn’t hold any electrons in its D orbitals. You really build upon this in A2 but they clearly sprinkle it in AS too. Hopefully this makes sense.
