Help please

Hi , I am currently going into my second year doing chemistry. I was thinking about switching to chemical engineering. But I don't know what I want to do yet and thought I would enjoy the degree more than I do now.

I was also thinking I could do a Beng and an MSc because I heard it would be more specialised and I could also stay at home the final year. The thing is the entry requirements for an Msc in chem eng other than chem eng is chem with sufficient maths. I am not sure if the sufficient maths means joint honours or not. But also if I plan to do that is it a waste if I switch since I could get in with chemistry?

I was thinking I should switch anyway since I have not really liked this year but I am scared at the same time

Could anyone give me their thoughts please?

If you haven’t enjoyed studying chemistry what is it about chem eng that you think will be different?

Do you meet the A level requirements to switch to chem eng at your current university?

Before applying I was choosing between chem and chem eng. During first year I quite liked physicial chemistry and the maths modules I did so I thought I would like a more mathsy degree. I also hate organic and analytical chem and I believe more job opportunities are there. I also hate how for chem all our modules are 100% exam which means I don't do much throughout the semester. Also I heard chem eng pays more than chem and they are both very hard. I would rather do a hard degree and get paid more. I also don't like chem labs and find them very long and tedious. I don't know what I want to be so I like that eng degrees are broad as well

Yes I do meet the requirements I just have to start over from first year

I don’t know what I want to be but I want to keep my options open

Engineering does keep your options open, but I wouldn't recommend an engineering degree unless engineering is one of the options you're keen on pursuing, because lots of other degrees also keep your options open (including chemistry), and you might enjoy them better.

If you are not happy then do something. If you are unsure take a year out and give it more thought.Do not continue with a degree you hate but you have one more chance to get this right so research courses thoroughly

Yeah that’s true . I would have applied for chem eng to begin with but at that time I wasn’t very good at physics . I’m also not sure what other degrees I would like though

I don’t think I can take a year out otherwise I would be two years behind . I know that’s not a big deal but I also don’t want to be in the same year as my brother too . My mom is already mad that I don’t know what I want to be so taking a year I can’t do that.
I am researching but I don’t think there’s other course I would like . I looked at finance and stuff but then it’s not as broad as engineering is

So what is the plan if you do go for chem engineering?Your mum is probably concerned but it is ridiculous for her to be surprised an 18 yr old has no idea what they want to do.Plenty don't have a clue. Why would it matter if you were in the same year as your brother if you were at different unis? You will be paying for your degree for a very long time so better to make sure it is the right one.

I don't have a plan I just want to like my course and get through the degree ygm. I also don't want to do a hard degree to not be paid decently in the end. I also had to resit one of my modules so I need a plan b for if i failed it and I will not retake the year, I also feel like its because my mom wanted me to do an engineering degree to begin with too. But more than eng she wanted me to do medicine and she was on about those kids who are doing med to make their parents proud. I also want to make her proud so.
Yeah I know but she doesnt get that
It matters because I am always compared to him and I don't want the direct comparison of studying at the same time as him either. I have also sorted my accom out for this year.

Okay so the plan is to change courses at your uni yes?I still think it is your life not your mother's and you are going to be paying for it for the next fifty years! Also you can sublet accommodation that is the worst reason do rush into a decision.Do you actually think chemical engineering will be an easy degree?@Muttley79 can you advise Op on opening post.

Yes it is
Yes but it’s hard when she makes such comments
I didn’t say it was an easy degree but neither is chem anyway . I’m saying that I chose this degree thinking it would be easier for me to do but I underestimated the difficulty at degree level .So If I’m gonna to have to work so hard I’d like to study a degree that has good opportunities after and I am paid well . I don’t want to end up as a lab tech after all this work and I’ve been hearing bad things about chem too so idk
Also I feel like I have wasted this year and have done nothing so I want to start afresh too . I have missed the opportunity to run for comittee of a society and this summer I have had no luck in getting a part time job . I have accomplished nothing this year. But at the same time I’m just very confused and keep going back and forth with my decision to switch or not.

I am asking another helper for their advice about engineering.I am sorry your mother makes these comments that are hurtful and are not helpful at all.I understand about doing a degre with prospects but worry you might be jumping from the frying pan into the fire .Have you made any enquiries about changing at all?

Thank you for that
Yes I am very upset and I don’t know what to do . I did well in my alevels so people have been questioning why I picked chem and not med or something else

Yes I have they said I can transfer but I need to send in a personal statement. I’ve started it but not finished it . I just don’t know if I should or not and I need to make a choice quickly since uni starts 25th. But I don’t even know if I’ll get on to second year either so I need a plan b too

I did read it last night but when a parent is so heavily influencing choices then it's hard to give advice.

I thought the responses so far were helpful.

She is influencing my choices but I still have a choice . She said she doesn’t mind me doing chem or chem eng but I think she does have a preference. But she is telling me to choose wisely since I can’t keep switching
This course I didn’t enjoy from like the start and I don’t feel like studying coz it doesn’t feel worth all the effort .

Have you researched Chem Eng? https://www.ucas.com/explore/subjects/chemical-engineering

It might be useful to tell us what A levels you have and what else interests you.

Yeah I have. I have speaking to people who do chem eng too . I just wish I applied for it rather than chem

I did maths ,chem and physics . When I was applying I wasn’t too good at physics then got better nearer to exams

I have no real interests tbh I always liked and did better in maths and science at school. But when things get tough I lose motivation to study and end up hating it which happened with physics and now chem . So really it’s my mindset that needs to change firstly .

Could you suspend your studies and take a gap year? It seems you really need time to get advice on your options rather than swapping now and maybe being unhappy doing Chem Eng.
