Is it still possible to apply for a 16+ oyster card for 1 yr?

I'm a new undergrad and got the 18+ a few weeks back and did not know i could get the 16+ for 1 year. I've been using the 18+ for a while now but I'm using up a lot of money each week by doing so. I went on the TFL website but it didn't really say anything about owning more than one oyster card. Is it really okay to apply for one right now?

Is this for getting around London on the Tube?

Personally, I don't know what is better, but whenever I'm in London, I just use my normal debit (credit also probably works) card. Just tap, pay and get on the train. I though that they removed the requirement to have an oyster card a decade ago. Now, it is definitely possible to pay with card.
Does the oyster card actually have any benefits as opposed to just using a normal debit/credit card?

(I just didn't know that people have oyster cards now)
