Physics mass-energy question.

Please may someone help with this question:

Context: I have just calculated the %change in rest mass of a steel bar of mass 5.0 tonnes and a beta particle, when they gain energy, with the increase in mass, as a proportion of rest mass, for the beta particle being a magnitude of 10^3 greater than the steel bar.

Question:

What would you say to someone who said "This mass-energy equivalence is nonsense - whoever felt the mass of something increase just because it had more energy? We all know that the mass of something is constant."
I know that E = mc2, but I don't know how to answer the question without fully relying on the formula.
