The Student Room Group

School is making me go counselling...

so i just started at this new sixth form for smart arses. so far i havent been the most exemplary student and i havent particularly enjoyed sixth form either.

anyway, after a few detentions, and incidents (2 of which were serious), the school took mercy on me and after 2 lengthy conversations they gave me the choice to start seeing the schools counsellor or get kicked out. this is because in those conversations i had to reveal problems that ive been having at home, academically etc which gave them concern.

anyway im not sure about this. i dont know if counselling is like therapy (like in The Sopranos, which was cool), or whatever. infact i literally have no clue what im supposed to do there, or if it's even right for me.

what do you guys think? and what the hell is counselling in school anyway?
They're referring you because you've been a naughty kid, you haven't grasped discipline (which you should have by sixth form) and you gotta learn, otherwise you'll be out on the streets and in prison

its not for disciplinary purposes, and im not going to counselling for discussing my behaviour, but personal problems such as smoking and things at home which ive spoke to them about in length. you havent really read what i wrote.
Then they're referring you because smoking is a bad thing and they want you to cut it out

i didnt ask you why they're referring me.
do you just post in the mental health section for the sake of it?

Different counsellors have different approaches, some will as you one question and literally just sit there and let you do all the talking, others might ask you questions in response to what you say i.e. why do you feel that way... and help you find solutions to issues.

So it varies. I doubt counselling is a bad thing, as you've mentioned there are some issues, it's worth talking to someone that has no part in it and is purely there to listen. Hope this helped!
