Excuse me? totes? Please speak proper English my good sir.
But yes, I do love a good canopé. I am eating one now in fact, listening to Radiohead, sat on a chais long stroking the family dog as mama gets the tea sorted

Chais, of course are plural; chai is singular. Chaise is the singular of chair or a small carriage.

So we have conjured up images of people sat on chaises longues (odd-shaped settees) mounted upon the roofs of wine warehouses, learning to improve their French and English spelling while stroking the family dog and awaiting their carriage.

They must be middle class, surely?

If you are currently sitting on a wine warehouse roof, yes.

No I am sitting on a chaise lounge in my dining room. Does that mean I'm not middle class?

What is a chaise lounge?
I don't think it's as simple as what job you do or how much money you have. That's just a generic rigid term based on 19th century status quo imo. Nowadays class has other determining factors- the food you eat, what newspaper you read, what television programs you watch etc
