Does anyone else agree that what they expect us to know for this exam is just FAR, FAR too much?

As in, humanly impossible? :'(

i'm too nervous for words about this exam, nowhere near ready.

Oh DEFINITELY.
I've been revising since Sunday for my English exam on Thursday. I am revising for Sociology on Friday (Crime and Deviance), Saturday (Research) and Sunday (Theory and Methods), which is OBVIOUSLY nowhere near enough time!?!?!?!!?! This is my own fault, I clearly should have started revising earlier, but because the material is so large, I only finished my notes in May, and I'm not the sort of person who can write notes, highlight etc and make things pretty and remember it like that. I have to read over things and over things until it gets drilled in. ARGHH! Hopefully it will be a relatively nice paper. I do hate how it is so 'bitty' though x

Hi, guys I was wondering if anyone could help me in terms of grade boundries. I currently have 169/400 for sociology (scly1+2+3), I dont know if they are the UMS marks or raw marks or W.E., I was wondering what marks out of /120 would I need to get in this unit (SCLY4) inorder to secure a grade C A-Level?

Thanks alot.
Hey everyone,

I wonder if you can help me. I just cannot get my head around this question. The question is:

'Using material from Item A and elsewhere, assess the view that ethnic differences in crime rates are the result of the ways in which the criminal justice system operates.' (This is from January 2010).

This may sound half-sharp, if it does I apologise. To actually answer the question would I talk about why the crimes rates are as they are because of the criminal justice system - so thoroughly go into how the socialisation of police officers affects it, police culture 'canteen culture' etc. But I have an urge to talk about external factors such as why there are ethnic differences. And then compare and contrast their relevance...

So I mean in paragraph one I would talk the criminal justice system and all the reasons why it causes the ethnic differences in crime rates and then say to what extent this is significant.

Then in paragraph 2, I would talk about say black people more likely to be in single parent families... ah poo, as I am writing this I am realising I am talking about ethnic differences in reasons for committing crime rather than the rates...

Ok, all this aside, if I was just to thoroughly explore the criminal justice system, would I assess the different reasons why there are ethnic differences in crime rates. So, here look at the... I am so confused. Maybe it is stress. Yeah, that's it. Maybe stress is causing my mind to shut down. Please help me.

Yeah, luckily I only need 76/120 in UMS marks, a C, which works out at exactly half marks in raw marks on the paper, which is a bit of a boost, but obviously it will be very easy for me to get less than that if I haven't managed to get a good grip on everything!
How on earth can you evaluate the section on globalisation and green crime etc. The AQA Nelson Thornes book is absolutely dire on this section, and my other textbook seems to have loads of information, but it's just descriptive and there's not much debate on anything :s-smilie:

Hmm.

Good question...

I think in your answer you do bring in the ethnic reasons for committing crime.

There are two sides to the debate

Blacks are more criminal vs. blacks aren't more criminal

Blacks are more criminal would argue the rate is high and the rate is true. Family, media, second-generation immigrants losing religiosity, subcultures, relative deprivation, marginalisation, racism. The CJS is good and fair, blacks are simply more criminal.

Then you'd outline the counter argument saying that the CJS is not good and fair. The above reasons aren't the major factor in the rate being so high. You'd bring in things like labelling, policing styles, the Macpherson inquiry - institutional racism, a biased CJS, new criminology, moral panics.

I think...

ooh  what do you need overall then?
i've got 252/400 ums so far... so i need 68/120 if my maths is right? which works out as 56.6666%, does that mean a D?!!??!
(edited 12 years ago)
same but i don't even know how to!!
i know, i know, but i'm really worried i won't be able to link it in:frown:
Yeah.
I want to do English at university so I quite enjoy it
I've been going over my wider reading, context, form, structure, language points etc,
and I'm going to do some context revision today briefly, literary and historical, and then practice some essays! As I said in the actual English thread - If the extract is difficult (I looked at June '10 and found it ridiculous...) it's going to be horrendous!
I want to go to Loughborough, which is AAB. Yeah a juicy A would be nice haha, erm providing my coursework is what they say it is (my school says I got 67/70 which I think converts to 78/80 or something using the UMS converter) then I'll need a C. But even if my coursework is on the cusp of an A, which is 64/80, that's still only one mark above a B that I'll need. So hopefully it will be ok!

I'm doing this on Monday!

I'm good with C&D - it's just theory & methods and methods in context which i need to cram this weekend!

Good luck everyone for exam day!
Heyy, how did you think it went? More importantly, how is your sociology revision going?!
Oh that's good then  I studied Hardy last year so I had a lot of context for him which was cool. That Rover extract was pretty easy to understand, I just need more time! I gave myself equal amounts for both questions but I think I only managed 2/3 language points in the 2nd Q, about the use of blazon/descriptions of the woman and something else  I can't even remember now, I think I've blocked it out! Hopefully will be the low B I think I need to get an A over all
And oh I'm starting c+d today, I think it works out at an hour for each topic with breaks in between. *handoverface*
anyone have any theory notes they wanna upload
When you've quite finished talking about English!!!!!

OH MY GOD, I seriously don't know ANYTHING. My teacher has been absolutely useless - just making us copy out of the textbook every lesson for the past 2 years. We haven't been taught Suicide, and we also haven't been taught ANYTHING for Theory.

I need 37/120 to get a C. PLEASE, GOD, PLEEEEEEEEEEASE HAVE MERCY. I've never felt so absolutely unprepared for an exam in my life, and it's on MONDAY!!!

Does anyone have any ideas on what's going to come up? My teacher thinks green crime, suicide (despite not having bothered teaching it to us), crime control and prevention, punishment, globalisation for C&D. For methods: documents, experiments for corporate crime/prison. Theory (again despite having simply left us to it): social action/interactionism.

I. WANT. TO. DIE.

Hey, quick question... I already have A grade in each of the others (SCLY1,2 and 3). Do I still need to get an A on this paper? Would I be able to sustain the A grade with a B or C grade in SCLY4?

Thanks for you help
Good luck for monday btw
