Were you using an 18-55mm? I've found that it can be really co-operative at times when taking a picture of both eyes, but when it comes to one eye it doesn't even like to attempt to focus...

Yeah, i tried taking one eye with the 18-55 but in the end I just gave up and took both, although I did use flash.
I'm kinda new at the whole SLR thing though
