Best unis for photography? (not necessarily film)

so far looking at glasgow school of art (apparently not an option on the uni checklist on this website?), ual and westminster
i’m more focused on fine art photography and photographic processes rather than filmmaking
In terms of graduates winning awards then it’s worth looking at AUB, Falmouth and NUA - but look at the online shows to get a feel for whether the course is going to be suited to your style - and details of the equipment and facilities available.
Hi there,

If you’re interested in photographic processes then we have two well-equipped wet and dry black and white darkrooms (plus colour darkroom bays/printers), with an emphasis on experimental and historical photographic processes. We have a dedicated team of technicians from a wide range of backgrounds as well as a network across the university and industry, so if there’s a question/process they can’t directly help you with, they’ll be happy to put you in touch with the right person.

We just hosted our Summer Shows of graduate work across campus which will be going live on our website later this month. Students presented their work as hanging installations, slide projections, moving image and even sculptural pieces. The course is very experimental, and photography isn’t restricted to ‘in-camera’ work. You can check out previous years’ work here for a better idea (www.aub.ac.uk/graduate-shows).

This is the course that Turner Prize winner Wolfgang Tillmans got his start (see: www.instagram.com/p/Cj-kEovrERH/). Other alumni and more about the course can be found here: www.aub.ac.uk/course/photography.

We also offer Commercial Photography with more of an emphasis on photography for industry outside of a fine art setting if you’re interested there’s more here: (www.aub.ac.uk/course/commercial-photography). Graduates from this course have gone on to work with major companies worldwide, with one of our alumni recently shooting the cover for Vogue.

There’s naturally some crossover with the courses, so it really depends on what you’re looking for as an artist. We’d recommend coming along to our next Open Day on 23 September to meet the course leaders and get a feel for the work our students create. More Open Day dates + info: www.aub.ac.uk/open-days).

Hope this helps let us know if you have any questions!

Hey there,

If you are looking for a course that has a hands-on approach, we offer a photography course that is worth a look into. Whilst it is called ‘Photography’, the program is designed to nurture your creative vision and technical skills, providing a comprehensive understanding of both digital and traditional methods, all with a more fine art approach.

Throughout the course, you'll have the opportunity to explore various aspects of fine art photography, such as conceptual development, composition, lighting, and post-processing techniques. You'll also delve into the rich history of photography and gain insights into contemporary practices to inspire your own work. In addition to this, you will also explore curatorial roles within photography and gallery work as well as exhibiting and publishing your work professionally.

Additionally, the Arts University Plymouth offers access to industry standard facilities, including darkrooms, our equipment resource centre, studio spaces, and digital labs, enabling you to experiment with different processes and mediums.

The faculty comprises experienced professionals who are passionate about photography and dedicated to helping you realise your artistic potential. They'll provide personalised guidance and feedback, ensuring you make the most of your learning journey.

Throughout the three years, there is also a heavy focus on your professional development, so that when you leave us, you are as prepared and employable as you can be for the industry.

You can find the course page here: https://www.aup.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/ba-hons-photography/resources

If you have any specific questions or would like more details, feel free to ask. Good luck with your artistic pursuits!

Kind regards,
Harry
