HELP?! Public Law

Hi,
I have a scenario where an MP was naughty and said things he shouldn't have in a Parliamentary debate, which resulted in a hate campaign about a family. (I've already covered the privilege part of this, so that's all good).

The police got the consent of a junior official to search the MP's office, and they took files etc.

Is the junior official allowed to give consent for this? I'm rather confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Haven't done public law yet but didn't this scenario actually occur 'in real life'? Think the MP was Damien Green if that helps.
