Oh you're a star! thanks so much  It's my last exam for politics so I'm dreading it :frown: I know everything quite vaguely at the moment so for the next few days I'll be doing intense revision and try to cram everything in. It did work last time so hopefully I'll be alright  Are you doing unit 3 too?

Hey, I'm resitting it this time (got a C in January) and in the same position as you. Need to go through all the topics again to clear everything in my head and get my examples sorted. Good luck for it anyway!

Hey  hows revision going? I'm doing political parties now but I have no idea how to answer: to what extent the Republican party is conservative. Can you help me with it? Thanks

Hey this is probably how I would answer it:

- Introduce the fact that the parties have become more like 'umbrella parties' over the past few decades and how the ideology of the Republican part has changed.

- Talk about the different types of conservatives within the party, i.e. moderate republicans, conservative republicans, christian conservatives and how they influence the party with its policy making.

- You could then counter argue this with partianship, and talk about the transfer of Democrats to the republican party in the 90s and argue this has made it more conservative.

- If you could quote a few of the republican policies over recent years then this will add to your argument about it being more or less conservative

- Conclude, just summarise what you have been presenting in the argument and perhaps try and suggest which side has a stronger case (with justifcation).

Sorry if this didn't help, but its the only way I could think to answer it. I'll try and think of some new things to include tommorrow

I am still on Electoral systems :s, but I've only got parties and race to do as I am not doing pressure groups.

For that question could you mention how the republicans are opposed to affirmitive action, because it goes against the traditions of the american dream and meritocracy? :s-smilie:

hi does anyone know what the key factors were that determined the outcome of the 2010 mid-terms....im guessing the state of economy but what else? reckon this might come up tomorrow cos in 2008 they had the same question but on the presidential race. Thanks

Hi
For the 2010 mid-terms, you could mention things such as the opposition to medicare, no change, high unemployment still, economy is still bad, still at war, Guantanamo Bay hasn't closed.
Hope this helps

oh and i suppose obama's promise of $1000 tax reduction also hasn't developed, so he has been seen to 'lie' to the electorate.

what mark did you get in january?
quick question, if a 45 mark question said:

"How do pressure groups support the democratic process in the USA?"

would you answer is just demonstrating how they do support democracy, or also include the alternate argument on how they don't promote democracy ?

I would have thought it was the first as the question say how do they, not analyse or evaluate if they do etc, but a mark scheme I was looking at had the reverse argument in as well :/

To get the top marks you always have to show an area of debate, so yes you must discuss how the undermine/don't support a democratic society.

You could include things like:

Revolving Door Syndrome - How they gain support from ex-politicians to favour opinions from them

Focus on a minority group.issue within society and don't think about the implications it could have on society on a whole.

Not always a balance in arguments - meaning there are more pressure groups that are for restricting gun control rather than for it. National Rifle Association for example.

^^^ These all undermine a democracy.

You shouldn't need more than that, most of your argument should be focused on how it does support. So for example, improves political participation. Brings representation in between elections + mid-terms. Try and help minority groups etc.

Hope I helped
49/90 - I dont understand how this is an A*?
