Which semester would it be best to do a project in?

Next year will be my final year at uni. We have to choose 8 modules (4 modules in Sem 1 and 4 in sem 2), and one of these modules can be a project. I want to do this project. We can choose which semester we do it in and I was just wandering what semester do you think would be best to do it in?

Regarding background knowledge, a lot of the tutors have said they don't mind which semester they supervise in and so I am assuming that means I don't really need much "extra" knowledge from previous modules to help me.

What do you think would be a good idea?

I was thinking if I do it in Semester 1, I won't have to worry about doing the project and can get into a routine for learning for my 4 exams in the summer, however if I do it in semester 2, I only take 3 exams which could make it slightly easier as it is my final year.

What do you guys think?

I'd imagine there are many factors to consider, such as which semester you usually do best in (for example, you may study particularly well or unwell during Christmas holidays or Easter holidays), or such as what are the other modules you will be taking (for example, it could be the case that there are four modules you like in one semester but only three in another), and possibly there may be more factors. Without more information about your case, I don't think we can give great advice.

Personally, though, I would do it in the second semester, but I would work on it during first AND second semester (and perhaps summer?). This way, you'll be able to commit more to the project - a project, in my opinion, requires more commitment than the other modules. But this is just my view. It would be better if give us moire information about the situation.

Hi, thanks a lot for your reply

I was actually thinking about all this and to be honest, I work fairly equally during both semesters. In my first year, I did better in semester one and in my second year I did better in semester one. The difference in grades between each semester was only 2 - 3%. Its weird to tell which holidays I work well in because although I worked better during the Christmas holiday, I think I worked harder after I went back from Easter (probably to make up for not working properly during Easter).

Regarding module choices, I'm thinking about them now. My supervisor recommended 2 modules, one in either semester, although I don't have the pre requisite to do those so I need to see what he'll say now. However, I have made a list of the ones I would like to do (and have chosen to do) and, without cutting any out yet, I have chosen to do 3 in semester 1 and 7 in semester 2 lol, not including this project.

I think the module problem I am having is making the choice to specialise in stats and choose certain modules and not choose more open modules to allow me to work anywhere, and the modules I like.

For example, I have 2 statistical ones, 2 pure maths ones in geometry because I liked the geometry module I did (even though I only got 65%), and then 3 potential finance/economics ones.

It looks like I'll be doing it in semester one then isnt it lol. I was also asking because I did a group project in semester 2 last year which I got a first in and so I didn't work to badly on that, although I did spend an awful lot of time working on that project when I should've been revising. And I really would like to only do 3 exams in the summer.

I agree what you mean about a project taking time and thats another reason I was thinking of doing it in semester one because I can start in the holidays.

Hmm.

In my opinion I think it's better to specialise in the final year - at least if you're intending on doing postgraduate studies - since you're getting a firmer grounding for one particular area (and probably the project will be in the same area). However, if you're not going into postgraduate studies, it may be better to not let that be as much a factor as choosing the modules you'll do best in, if you know what I mean. But keeping the modules to one area may make you do better, anyway. From what you said about 3 modules in Semester 1 and 7 in Semester 2, though, it sounds like you should do the project in Semester 1! But make sure you work hard over summer for it.
