Carboxylate Ion

When a carboxylate ion is formed does the o negative ionically bond with a positive ion from the base or metal to form a 0-X+?

I think you are a bit confused here. The carboxylate ion forms from the dissociation of a carboxylic acid. The oxygen-hydrogen bond in the OH group on the carboxyl breaks and forms an O-. This then delocalises over the O-C=O system to form a carboxylate ion
