F324 past exam question

On the sythesis questions particularly the 7 mark one on jun 10 (phenylethanal) how do I answer these I've just started a2 so haven't got a proper feel how to answer them. I tried without looking at mark scheme and I got it all correct but I literally wrote displayed equations for each step. I then looked at mark scheme and it was explained step by step not wrote out displayed equation form so would I get the marks? Can I answer this way?
