I've been using speech recognition software since Thursday because my left hand got to sore. It is so annoying I feel like throwing my Mac out of the window :banghead:

I dont know, but I rang the doctor for an appointment today so I have medical evidence in case I need to apply for extra time. The first they could offer is the 24th :hmpf:
Happy Birthday, Madamerle! :awesome: :woo: :yay:  :danceboy: Hope you are OK and that you have a great day :h:

Big hugs to Craghy and anyone else who needs them :grouphugs:
How did you guys decide/know that you wanted to apply for a PhD? Any advice on that front?

I am increasingly feeling like I want further study/research opportunities in my specialism (which I love). But I had always intended to go into a vocational course afterwards, qualify and practise. Two months ago that was my very firm intention, and now I feel very much that - as I used to about a career in practice - I would regret not trying to take this further.

If I do apply, I think it will be for 2016 entry, which means I'll have a year out. It would need to be a very definite decision (as it would mean withdrawing from the vocational course - I have a deferred place) to change direction, at least for three plus years. Doing the course on the year out is not an option - it is one or the other.

Because of the year out I know I have some time to decide (realistically until June/July), so I'd be grateful for any advice/experiences you guys have about your own decisions to apply for PhDs, and any thoughts about what I can do to make the most informed decision possible (and prepare for strengthening my eventual app).

Edit: also Craghy, have you contemplated going to a walk in centre? That's where mine was first (informally) diagnosed. It might help with getting earlier medical evidence (even if its just your gp being able to confirm it has bothered you for longer because the visit is in your notes)? Hugs - RSI is horrible. If it still persists by gp appt, I would ask about referral to hand therapy/physio - I found acupuncture helpful in bringing me out of my worst pain flare up and reducing my pain and sensitivity in the long term.

My decision for PhDness was nowhere near as difficult because music isn't a vocational course as such. If you do it further it really is mostly just for love of the subject, as academic positions in universities to lecture/research/teach are few and far between.

I don't have any advice as such but I just wonder whether doing a PhD might be quite an expensive undertaking for not much gain? Not that I can talk on this subject - that would be hypocritical - plus I don't know your financial situation...

Sorry, that probably isn't as helpful as it sounded in my head :colondollar:

Haha no it is! All thoughts are helpful!

I wouldn't self-fund - so if I didn't get a funded PhD, that would be the end of it. At this moment in time, I'm not thinking of the PhD careerwise, as there's still a big chance I'd go into practice after the PhD (luckily in my field practice and academia are very intertwined - not uncommon to have practitioners as visiting lecturers, tutors and regularly authoring publications). That said, I'm open to the possibility of academia, but in a what will be will be way. It's not my reason for doing it, but it's something I'd consider. It's more that I hit on my specialism after my undergrad, and I don't think I'm going to exhaust my academic interest this year. I keep flagging down footnotes in books to follow up on more reading because I'm interested/curious, and I'm realising that I will never have the time to independently research to the depth that I would like - not without doing it full-time. I'm very, very aware that the level I'm studying at now and reading barely scratches the surface of what's out there on my topic.

It's essentially a very indulgent want, really

Nothing wrong with very indulgent wants! I'm all about satisfying indulgent wants (which is basically why I'm doing a PhD. I don't have the intention of a career in academia. Though my supervisor doesn't know that :ninja: She thinks my thesis could make a nice monograph if it's all about ABBA  ) :yep:

If you're not planning on doing it unfunded, I'd say still consider it. There's a lot to be said for doing more reading around the subject. I am really enjoying having the time and opportunity to delve into lots of academic-based reading again :colondollar:

By the sounds of what you've said, you have a love of your subject and a curiosity that's driving you. Pure curiosity is great but you've also got to enjoy the process of research itself, which in a way is the second key aspect of PhD life- if you do then a PhD seems like a totally reasonable route to go down! I actually think it's better to want to do a PhD because you're interested in the area, rather than as a means to an end (i.e. an academic career, though of course many people start off with the first and end up going into academia as a result of their continued interest in their field). For me, I really enjoy the process of research, and although I like my topic I don't think I'd mind doing something else (as long as it is quite sciencey) so that's my drive. I also can't imagine doing much else.
