m1 question

a box if mass 20kg rests on a rough horizontal floor, the coeff of friction being 0.3. A light string is attached to the box and a tension T is exerted with the string inclined upwards at 30 degrees to the horizontal. If the resulting acceleration is 0.5ms-1, find the value of T.

Please help

Can someone break it up and explain each step in detail please

I think in this forum people are reluctant to reply to your posts because this is not really designed for tuition.

The idea is to get some help if you are kind of stuck if you provide some workings.

I suggest if you are completely lost with your mechanics to ask your teacher or a friend which can show you the basics on a one to one and then if you can have some kind of attempt or ask something specific people will help.

We don't provide worked solutions here!

Presumably you have covered the basic principles in class, so what equations do you know that will help you?

Can you set up some basic equations representing the forces involved and the resultant motion?

1. Draw a diagram with all of the forces on.

2. Resolve vertically: upwards forces = downwards forces

3. Horizontally, use sum of forces = m x a

4. It's moving, so Friction = mu x R

Put all this together and out will fall the answer. Note that the tension will come into stages 2 and 3.
