The Student Room Group

It's frightening how much freedom of speech is being censored in today's universities

Obviously the likes of mainstream media and multi-billion dollar businesses are always going to succumb to the pressure of social justice warriors but you would except universities to remain places of free speech; places where students and staff can express so-called controversial opinions without fear of repression, job loss, or imprisonment. Besides obtaining a degree, one of the main purposes of these institutions is the dissemination of new ideas and the immersion of oneself in new ideas regardless of whether or not you agree with them. One would presume that college students have a certain baseline of education and so are fully aware that they do not have to condone every argument or viewpoint that is directed at them. As Aristotle put it, "the mark of an educated mind is being able to entertain a thought without necessarily accepting it".

Yet I've lost count of how many times I've heard about, and experienced first-hand, speakers being shunned by student protestors, debates being interrupted through chants, talks being halted due to the likes of persistent clapping and fog-horns and campaigns being established to prevent certain individuals being granted access to campus grounds. The irony of it all is that the individuals DOING this are typically your left-wing, liberal arts majors who want to be seen as progressive and all-encompassing to begin with yet they suppress and discourage ANY views contrary to their own.

There is also little academic freedom for professors who, I believe, should be even MORE immune to political correctness than students given that they are responsible for carrying out research from, what should be, an entirely unbiased baseline. Regardless of who it offends, who it persecutes or who it victimizes, academics should have the freedom to research WHATEVER they want provided their research is conducted fairly and accurately. Yet this is far from the reality. Take, for example, the Harvard professor who produced findings suggesting there were disparities between the average IQ of different races. Just for SUGGESTING that every ethnicity, gender, religion, sexuality and social class wasn't EXACTLY the same, he was fired. And there are countless cases of this. It truly is frightening to imagine where we may be in 30/40/50 years time.

Do any of you have experiences of this at your universities?
