Middlesex BA Dance Courses Q&A with Course Ambassador

Amazing! As you may know the MDX Dance department have some exciting news ready for this coming October. Middlesex University are building a new block in between the MDX House building and the car park. Currently it will be called the New Forum and lucky for dance at MDX, we are being given a brand new dance studio that will be just as high tech and good quality as our other studios and maybe even better. This will be available to use exclusively for the MDX dance department the same as all of our studios. This additional studio along with the our other studios and dance theatre will mean more space for classes and most importantly more space for student’s rehearsals. It shows the university values the dance presence at MDX. By providing more campus study space (that is in high demand by all subjects) to our department, it highlights that MDX are supporting the dance department (all members; students and staff) and the continuation of its growth.
Three cheers for the MDX Dance Team!

This is the basic outline of your timetable from 1st year onward where classes and lectures will get added or changed in regards to the couple of module options you have to decide on in second and third year. But yes, what I explained above relates to 1st year!
Thank you for your question and interest! It's great!

Great! Thank you so much for your help!
It may seem obvious but somehow it is easily forgotten. It is extremely important to focus on your dance training during your time at Middlesex University. Your classes will embed the fundamental principles into your movement which means if a class is missed; a chance to improve and maintain your ability is also missed. You should embrace every class that is timetabled to you and make sure your attendance is impeccable because you will thank yourself in the long run when you finish third year and notice your incredible improvement. As important as the dance training at your institution is, it is also essential that you reach outside of MDX university training and explore more workshops, classes or even just watching new performances in other places.Getting yourself out there, mixing with dance professionals to learn from them and being amongst the dance industry is what will skyrocket your growth as a dancer.

I was just wondering, what does the jazz module in 2nd year entail? Is it explored by studying a specific practitioner (Fosse/Jack Cole) or is it more general?

Thank you
It's different year by year and depending on the practitioners that we bring in for the Jazz module that particular year. We like to mix it up a bit and give a bit of variety. For example, fosse to African style movement to musical jazz.
Thank you for your question!

Hi Libby,

I'm so sorry I didn't get back to you yesterday afternoon, I was working during the day and evening so I wasn't able to see your message. The parents have their own sessions that they can attend that are separate from what you will be doing. It's to provide all the information that they would need as well. Obviously towards the end you can join together again with your parents to ask any questions to the dance lecturers/tutors/teachers that you may have  I hope that helps in some way!!

Thank you,

Hi Ellie!!

I'm so sorry to hear that you are unwell, that's such bad timing, it always happens when you don't want it to!
Unfortunately there isn't any other applicant days as this is the only one but if you still can and feeling just about well enough, maybe come in and watch the classes to observe so you still have an idea of what it will be like? It's completely up to you! Please get well soon and hopefully we will see you soon as well.

Thank you

Hi Ellie, that's absolutely fine!! I'm not sure if you've arrived yet and in class already but if you are still on your way don't panic, if you wait in the quad, I'll be able to come and get you in a minute and take you over to observe the classes . See you soon!

As most of you may know, we held our Applicant Day for dance at Middlesex last week on Saturday 19th March. I would like to say from myself and behalf of all at MDX dance, thank you for such a wonderful day. It was so great to see all of who came incredibly inspired, fully engaged in the technique class and getting really creative in the choreography workshop. Everyone that has received an offer to study dance at Middlesex this coming October was invited to join us for the Applicant Day and we had an absolutely amazing turn out. It's a shame if you couldn't be part of it but hopefully you have come along to an open day and seen what dance at MDX is like. Sarah Sulemanji, who is our dance teacher for graham technique for first and second years, led a graham technique class on the Applicant Day. Louise Kelsey, MDX dance performance programme leader, took a choreography workshop with the applicants to introduce choreography as being creative, explorative and fun at MDX. After the two one hour and a half sessions, we then moved onto the performance we put together for the applicants to showcase some of the impressive choreography work created by different individuals studying dance at MDX from all three year groups. The performances embraced the diversity, individuality, variety in choreography style and ways of working within dance at Middlesex University that we proudly encourage. I hope everyone that came enjoyed their snippet experience of dance at Middlesex University. We look forward to welcoming you all in October!

Move It 2016 was an astounding success for MDX Dance. We were at stand 113 next to studio 1 where we were amongst it all! It was a fantastic and enjoyable weekend filled with dance performances, connecting with tons of companies and talking to prospective students. Thank you to everyone who came over to find out more and ask any questions they had and to those who just came to say hello which was wonderful! This year it was in a new location, the ExCeL London building, which was so much easier to get to and so much more spacious for the Move It event. It also meant the layout of the event improved a lot too. A new addition to this year's Move It was the Showcase Theatre area where performances took place throughout the day with different colleges, conservatoires and universities showcasing their specialist performing arts work from theatre to dance. It was a big year for MDX at Move It 2016 as we were lucky enough to get two performance slots in the Showcase Theatre on the Friday. These were choreography works created by two separate second year students. I'm incredibly proud of how they represented dance at MDX because of the diversity, individual artistic vision and exploration of movement that was embraced throughout both performances. If you stopped to watch either performance, thank you and I hope it inspired you to look into a future in dance at Middlesex University.

Also, Happy Belated Easter! I hope everyone was able to spend some quality time with their loved ones.

As it is now near the end of the dance semester, it is the important time where all the hard work pays off. It is time for the exams.Everyone is polishing up on the different techniques and making sure they are implementing the principles into their dancing. All those classes over the past academic year lead up till this moment. The technique exams are taken by your teacher so they understand your progress and your journey with the technique. The technique classes and rehearsals also lead up to the third year performance at the Arts Depot, the pinnacle point of the last year of the course. The diverse and innovative third year choreography performances have now taken place where the third years who chose to take choreography showcase their final performances that they have created and produced and should be proud of. It took place over three weeks in our Grove Dance Theatre. All their loved ones, various people from the dance industry and people who have supported them showed up to watch their work. Another reason for them to celebrate is that their independent research projects, aka dissertation, are handed in and all the detailed research and work that went into them is now completed. They only thing they can now do is wait for the results and be proud of how hard they worked over the academic year dancing, researching and writing.

Hey Kirsty,

I was wondering if you could give me any ideas of what kind of things doing dance at Middlesex can lead onto when looking into careers? Do you think studying dance at uni gives you good opportunities for a full time career in dance, compared to going to a full time dance school?

Hi Sophie,
Thank you for your question .
Our dance degree courses at Middlesex uni are full time, Monday to Friday. Middlesex lets you see all the possible opportunities that the dance industry can offer, more so than a vocational school who generally just show you the performing side, but nowadays, it's important to know more about the dance industry than just performing. We educate you all the knowledge you need to become your own independent dance artist whether that is a choreographer, a dance teacher, dance marketing officer, a manager of your own company, an artistic director, a critic, a dance company member (however full time performing positions unfortunately in the UK are extremely limited in the current dance industry) to name just a few of the jobs within dance, therefore we teach you how to have a sustainable career within dance as you can be versatile and can do multiple things like these all at once. To have a successful dance career, a portfolio career is key because it creates a long standing career and you will be an experienced member of dance for many years. Middlesex is known for producing amazing creatives who stay in the dance industry and become major contributors to the movement of the dance industry. We are very well known for our dance training here at Middlesex and are proud of it.

It's completely up to you what you want to do; obviously you need to listen to your head but always remember to go with your heart as well. At the end of the day, it's your choice and you have to live it .

Good luck!!

Thank you!

So the last essays have been handed in and the final performance at Arts Depot has taken place. I went to watch the third year students in their final show and they were absolutely magnificent. Altogether there were 6 separate dance pieces. There were two repertoire pieces; a Humphrey performance directed by Lesley Main and a Cohan performance directed by Anne Donnelly. There was also two new works by Louise Kelsey and also Yolande Yorke-Edgell that the third year performance students collaborated on with these two choreographers to create two separate pieces. Accompanying the professional works were two third year choreography pieces that were selected to be taken to Arts Depot to dance alongside the repertoire and new work performances. It was a spectacular evening with everyone showing what they were capable of in their technique and ability to shine on stage. The precision and energy within the Cohan piece was impeccable and all six dancers were equally at a very high standard. The Humphrey performance showed the authentic technique in its raw form thanks to the wonderful dancers. Even though there was a larger cast for this piece, it was still on point and every single third year performer embodied the professionalism and technique. The new works were astounding and embraced innovative ways of incorporating voice, props, set, digital aspects with the movement itself. Louise Kelsey’s new work was something that I have never seen before and was by far my favourite performance of the night.

If any of you attended the Arts Depot performance evening, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did and has showed you what amazing dancers MDX can produce.

Hi Kirsty,

I was just wondering do we need to get an meningitis jab before we come or does the uni provide the jabs. Also, i have already received my confirmation for Platt Halls for this year, is there anyway I can come and view a room before I move in in the summer or do I need to look at all measurements online? Are there any other costs apart from halls and food e.g. bills that I need to prepare for ?

Libby
Hi,

Would you please be able to talk through the difference between the Dance Studies course and the Dance Performance course as they are listed separately on the univeristy website? Just a little confused on the similarities/differences/exit award options?

Thank you
