Look at any list of best albums ever

I disagree that a mere list of best albums (which of course is subjective anyway) is what defines the best music.

Ignoring the fact that it's subjective, how on earth is a list of the best albums not a good representation of the best music?

It is subjective, but literally every list is male dominated so everyone agrees with me

Depends who compiles the list. If it's Rolling Stone you'd think there wasn't much decent Hip-Hop and all of the best artists were white guitar bands from the 60s and 70s. If it's NME you'd think Britpop was the best music ever.

Pretty much. Only way (and it's a bad way to determine if the music is good or not) to quantify this is through record sales but men win there as well.
There are plenty of fantastic and influential female musicians: PJ Harvey, Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell etc.

If you're just looking at chart topping, mainstream musicians then you need to try harder.

No one is denying that. Point is there's more fantastic and influential male musicians.

Up until recently the music industry was incredibly sexist. For females it was (and in many cases still is) difficult for them to get their ideas across, and many talented female acts have been dumbed down and over-sexualised just to boost record sales. I doubt that in the 1960s an all-female band signed to a major record label would have been given the same amount of artistic freedom, press coverage or credit as The Beatles.

That's probably true, but even if you just look at the 21st century, the best selling and most critically acclaimed albums are still mostly male.

Artists like Rihanna, Britney Spears and Shakira all choose to sexualise their music. They know that the only way they're going to stay at the top of the charts is if they become commodities and products of commercialism. Sure, music is subjective, but you can't ignore the fact that their music is only boosted by the image and portrait that they have chosen to send out to the public.

Effectively, they're not even artists: they're personalities.
Well taking it away from chart/pop music, I currently listen to a lot of acapella music and am really into finding new groups. However I've found that the all-male or mixed groups are far better than all-female groups. There are some good all-female groups out there, but I think this is perhaps because the male voice is capable of a lot more than the female voice. They can sing the bassiest bass there is, then go falsetto, then can sing camply or "manly"... An all-male group has a lot more range potential than a female group because females can't sing the really low bass notes that males can. Seriously, I'm jealous! My 2 1/2 octave range looks measly next to a bass who can sing falsetto! :P
The 'best' music has probably been made by men.

No point denying it.

I wonder whether men tend to be more inherently confident.

They take more risks. This has meant that more men have reached the heights in music.
I actually prefer music made by women, I love the sound of a lady's voice

smh

Btw, I just looked at my top 50 last.fm artists (of all time) and it's a pretty poor showing for women. The highest ranked is Sonic Youth at 35th. My top 34 are ALL male artists/bands/groups. Below that I have Bjork at 42nd and The XX at 46th. Even then two of those three are partnerships or groups with men.

I don't know if I should be ashamed of myself or if I'm just agreeing with Difeo.

...Actually those two things are probably mutually dependent.

Mine doesn't count. It was put in a spoiler and it isn't the whole page being spammed like what happens in the music forum.
