You know a river is moving quickly when it is able to hold sediment in suspension and carry it down-course, but as soon as it slows down, then deposition starts happening.

A river will have the most kinetic energy (ie. faster) in the middle course, where the potential energy (due to height) from the upper course has been converted into kinetic energy. The river slows in the lower course due to typical widening of the river channel. This is why deposition is most in the lower course near the mouth ie. deltas (or alluvial fans on land).

I thought velocity is fastest in the lower course because of the hydraulic radius.
