Whats the difference between "average" and well..not average?

A few questions have asked for the "average" of something, e.g. average work, average power, average force...

Now, is this really as simple as just dividing certain values by 2? and which values? These questions really throw me off :s-smilie:

afaik it means treating a pulsed force of a high peak magnitude as if it were continuous force of a lower magnitude.

but 'average' might specifically mean 'calculate RMS' if talking about the speed of molecules in a gas or power developed in an AC circuit.
