Vieta Jumping

I saw the classic IMO example involving this with a decreaasing sequence of roots mmeaning that we had to reach a square. But I don't understand how all solutions are squares because if it holds for some 0 in the sequence and a_n then what says it holds for the pair a_n-1 and a_n
