Hello,

I have an offer for Medicine and hopefully I will be moving to Glasgow in September. What happens after you submit your application for accommodation? Do you have to wait until August for an offer? And what if I don't like my offer eg. shared room ?

Hi @alexhull21,

In accordance with the current Accommodation Admissions policy, a reasonable commute to Campus would be defined as a journey time in the region of 1 hour 20 minutes or less. If you are in any doubt as to your own status just drop us an email or give us a call we can check it for you.

Best wishes,

Hi @allessences

Congratulations on getting in to Medicine. The timing of your accommodation offer will really just depend on whether you have a conditional or unconditional offer of study. Our allocations process will be underway very shortly so students with Unconditional Firm course offers should start receiving offers over the next few weeks. Students with conditional offers should start receiving theirs shortly after Higher and A Level results are published in August.

If you were to receive an offer of accommodation that you didn’t want to take up you would simply reject the offer as you wouldn’t held to anything until you had signed the contract.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,

Hi!
I am planning on going to the University of Glasgow next year to study a postgraduate. What accommodation is the most suitable one with respect to social life?
Thank you

Hi Katta, I think it definitely depends on what kind of a social life you want. I work at a site called Bridge House in the West End of Glasgow. We're a 128 bed building, so quite small in comparison to other student accommodation buildings. However, if you were looking to meet other postgraduates easily and form close friendships quickly, we could be a great fit for you.

An alternative would be another Fresh Student Living building, Dunaskin Mill, they are a much bigger building of around 500 rooms and there's a better chance to meet a larger number of people; if that is more your thing.

Our website has more information about both sites: http://freshstudentliving.co.uk/location/glasgow/.

Thanks,

Lilith

Hi, I am hoping to study to dentistry this September. Are there any recommended accommodations within reasonable distance to both the dental school and the uni?

Thanks

Hi there, I think I recommended this to you in another thread but I would look into Bridge House. We are 10 minutes from the university campus and about 20 minutes walk from the dental school. We are a 128 bed site with 6 bed flats with en-suite rooms - all bills included, an on-site gym and social spaces. Have a look at our website here: http://freshstudentliving.co.uk/property/bridge-house/?

Hi @katta

Excellent choice, Glasgow is a fantastic place to be a postgrad:smile: As far as the social side of the residences go, Kelvinhaugh Street, Maclay, Winton Drive and Lister House all have a good reputation for sociability and friendliness. They all have quite distinct features and are located in different parts of the West End though so you’ll find out a lot more about that on our website. There’s also a blog post that we contributed to the Uni’s excellent PGR Blog.

The Living Support teams at all our residences work hard to ensure that there are lots of social events going on throughout the year. If you have a look at the residences Facebook pages you should get a better idea of the kind of events that are on offer - Maclay Residences, Kelvinhaugh Residences, Lister House and Queen Margaret Residences & Winton Drive. There’s also more on our UofGLiving landing pages - Kelvinhaugh Street, Winton Drive, Lister House and Maclay Residence

Hope this helps with your decision.

All the best,

Alexander

Hi @ahfae,

We don’t really have a recommended residence for Dental students as all of our halls are within good travelling distance of both the main university campus and the Dental Hospital. As far as distance goes Cairncross House, Kelvinhaugh Gate and Student Apartments are definitely the closest being only around 10/15 minutes’ walk away from both the campus and hospital. Queen Margaret, Winton Drive and Murano Street are slightly further out but, on foot, are only 20/25 minutes way from campus about 40 minutes away from the dental hospital. Wolfson Hall, our catered residence, is further away again but like Queen Margaret and Murano Street, it is located close to some good transport routes that will get you into the west end and city centre.

There’s a lot more information about our residences on our website which has location maps and facility breakdowns for each site. Hopefully this will help with your decision but if you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to get back to us.

Best wishes,

Hello! I've applied for student accomodation and student appartments was my first choice. After reading the guide that you've posted on the Accomodations website I still have a couple of questions regarding the layout of this student housing. For example does the whole floor share the kitchen and bathroom, if so how many people would that be? Also is there any other communal space i.e a livving room. And last question I promise 😅- are students assigned housing according to ex internationals or british, although I want to be immersed in the scottish culture I will also miss home so having a roomate or someone on the floor be from a country whom i share a similar culture with would be incredible, so i was wondering if nationality is a criterion you use to allocate rooms. Thank you so much for your time!

Hi,
I am considering applying for accommodation. My main concern is, if after say a month of living in accommodation I decide it is not for me and I would prefer to travel from my home to the university everyday instead, would I still have to pay the remainder of the years fees for the accommodation I am no longer living in?

Hi @Everyusername12

Excellent, all the best with your application:smile: Unfortunately, because Student Apartments are based in traditional tenement buildings, there isn’t really a standard layout that we could say was representative of the site. However, in terms of numbers, the flats in Student Apartments generally hold between 5 and 12 students each. Each flat shares kitchen and bathroom facilities but in the case of 12 person flat, there would be additional facilities in place to cater for the additional students. There aren’t any living rooms in the Student Apartment flats however the communal kitchens tend to be perfect for socialising and catching up with your flatmates.

We don’t assign rooms on the basis of nationality so international and domestic students can all be allocated together. When we are allocating the rooms we primarily take into account age, gender and level of study in order to place students near to others with similar interests. If you knew of someone in particular that you would like to share with we could try and arrange that, provided you had both requested to do so.

Hi @a053

Yes, if you were to collect your keys and move in to your residence you would be liable for the full years fees so it would be best to consider whether staying in accommodation is something that is right for you before taking on the contract.

There is a way where, if you found another University of Glasgow student of the same gender and year of study who was not already in accommodation, you could transfer the contract but this would be risky as you would be relying on finding a suitable replacement.

Hi @Hundeschule,

Yes, Student Apartments is always a very popular choice amongst our students but the difference in price is only due to the fact that Queen Margaret and Kelvinhaugh Gate have ensuite rooms whilst both twin and single rooms in Student Apartments are standard with shared bathroom facilities.

This keeps coming up: "shared bathroom facilities". How many people share the facilities? It's not written anywhere (or I couldn't find it?)

Hi @luciahalamova

That would really depend on the size of the flat you were in but it wouldn’t be more than 5 other people.

Hi!

I recently applied for the accommodation and was told that due to a certain delay, the offer will be made a bit late. Has the issue been resolved? When can we expect to hear from the accommodation? Has anyone got an offer of accomodation yet?

Hi, I am starting my undergraduate in September and I have booked private accommodation with unite students.
Do I need to inform Glasgow University of this so they know I do not need accommodation or does me not applying through the UofG website mean they automatically know I don't need it?
Thanks

Hi @gauriksharma28

Yes, unfortunately, there has been a slight delay in the accommodation offers being sent out this year. Apologies for any inconvenience this hold up may have caused. The offers should be ready to go very shortly though so please bear with us and we will get them sent out as soon as we possibly can.

Hi @beckyc7

No, if you didn’t submit an online application then you don’t need to inform us if you go elsewhere.
