You need to subtract the whole of X from b, so X=(c-d)
And therefore it's number 2
Do you understand why?

Which is right, is it 1) or 2)? And why?

I'm forgetting really simple stuff. Trying to do an integration via parts and I got the sign wrong for one of the bits.

2.

The clue is in what you did. Put some brackets around what you're trying to substitute for.

b-x = b - (x) = b - (c - d)

That will isolate your substitution from any sign considerations, and you can then process them when you remove the brackets.
