Re: Extended Project on MO Theory?
Mostly valance bond theory - based around electrons being localised between atoms in a bond. The two start to agree and overlap more as you go deeper into the topics but at the level you'll be looking at they're different enough for a comparison.
Valance theory can predict some things better than MO theory too, so it's a good topic for an essay. -
Re: Ultimate EPQ thread
I'm may be starting the EPQ next year when i go into Year 12. Right now, i'm quite interested in the Law.
So, just wondered, which if any of these topics seem suitable.
'Are judges subconsciously influenced by a defendant's race'
' Can convicts ever truly reform & repent '
'Are rules & regulations inadvertently encouraging crime'
'Are we in need of consistent international laws
The legal system is severely flawed'
'Why are the wealthy immune to facing the repercussions of their actions'
These are only rough ideas.
Any help is appreciated

Re: Ultimate EPQ thread
Hello

I'm doing mine on the great depression (I noticed someone else in the thread is as well
).
I was thinking of comparing the political, social and economic situation in the lead up, or that lead to the Great Depression and then the recent recession.
I need some help though, on
a.forming in into a slightly more narrow question and acutally into a question
b. which country to focus on?
Any help? -
Re: Ultimate EPQ thread
Hey, I've been doing the EPQ for about 9 months but I decided the other day to completley change me project. I have gone from one on Eating Disorders to Fascism.
But, I'm a little stuck on my new question - I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of what I could do it about, I was thinking of doing about either European Fascism or just Italian fascism.
I'm rubbish at thinking of questions so it'd be super helpful if someone could give me a hand?
Plus feedback on doing just european or just italian fascism would be helpful thanks

Re: Ultimate EPQ threadThats a good idea warpie. The unification of Germany is a great topic to look at simply because Otto von Bismarck is easily the greatest military and political strategist of the 19th century!(Original post by letsdothetimewarpagain)
I know a lot of people say to do your project on something you haven't studied but related to it, if I were to do a project on the unification of germany so 1871 but study for a level from the 1900s+ would that be seperate enough to make it worthwhile? -
Re: Ultimate EPQ threadim doing my epq on the golden ratio, mostly what you suggested, and im finding that there is so much to put in, im on 4000 words at the moment and still havent got to the point!(Original post by foolsihboy)
You could do the natural occurence of maths in the real world
And interesting fact is that if you take a big enough sample of rivers in the world, the ratio of
Straight length : Actual river length
always comes to
Sure that you could expand the amazing links between maths and the real world to a 5000 word thingymabob. I considered doing that, but couldn't be arsed doing the research

Re: Extended Project ideas - Germanoh thats really cool, where abouts are you going to do your work experience? i went to aachen (near koln) last febuary and i did mine in a museum! it was soo fun working, you'll love it!(Original post by louisew24094)
hey! im really wanting to do my epq on german as well! I am going over to Germany at the beginning of September for work experience to work in a primary school, and so my epq tutor has suggested doing it on how they learn english, which sounds really interesting and fun, but I don't know if I'll be able to learn enough about how they learn english. Please if anyone has any ideas!!
I also study German, Psychology and English Literature, Peach.Plum.Pear!! but my 4th subject is theatre studies which i'm probably dropping next year.

Extended Project Presentations
I'm confused about the presentation aspect of the EPQ..the AQA website says that it must contain non specialists BUT can be ono-to-one with the supervisor
However, my supervisor is a Chemistry teacher, ie a specialist
Does this mean that my presentation could be to my supervisor + 1 non specialist in an interview type manner?
I really dont like the idea of explaining MO Theory and Valence Bond theory o non specialists...
Thanks for any advice/confirmation

Re: Ultimate EPQ threadI was thinking of something similar, but less history based, and more economics/current affairs/politics (apparently the spec. likes overlap in subjects though!)(Original post by EnVogue)

I agree, it's hard to find a fairly narrow question :-/
I am thinking something to do with the 08/09 recession, but I am finding it hard narrowing it on one thing. Do I go for the cause and effects of the recession (still seems too open, imo)
or target one area of the recession (e.g how the recession has affected [car industry firm] [production/profits/etc.]?)
or target a specific country I've not studied (i.e. not the UK) and how they've dealt with it differently to the UK?
Any other ideas would be much appreciated (note: only ideas/title names, we're not asking for you to do it for us
)

Re: Ultimate EPQ threadYou can't have it so narrow there is not enough to fill 6000 wordsI was thinking of something similar, but less history based, and more economics/current affairs/politics (apparently the spec. likes overlap in subjects though!)

How about how the Euro has been affected by the recession - there have been/are fears of it crashing. You write about the measures taken in Greece, Germany's help etc. Perhaps call it something along the lines 'Recession 08/09: What was it's affects on the Euro and what measures were taken to save the European currency?'
Perhaps it is a little broad, but it's do-able. If you have the time and the motivation that could make a great dissertation. -
AQA Extended Project: Help!
Ok, my school has been fairly useless at explaining what we're actually meant to be doing with the AQA Extended Project over the summer so just a couple of questions:
a) Is 5000 words for the report an absolute limit or just a guide? I tend to be quite bad with word limits...
b)Is anyone else doing an English literature based project? I was thinking of investigating the attitudes of the Brontes to feminism but would that work and is it too wide a topic?
Thanks! -
Re: AQA Extended Project: Help!1.5,000 is the minimum. The aim is to be concise, so apparently should aim for no more than 6,500 but there is NO limit.(Original post by sanksta)

2. No idea, sorry

Re: AQA Extended Project: Help!I thought it was 6,000, or that is what my school told me.(Original post by sanksta)

I'm not doing a literature project, but I don't think it's too wide of a topic (You need a good thing to write about, some I see as far to isolated) - just set some 'questions' in your introduction which you will answer throughout your EPQ revolving around that topic and you should be fine. I'm setting mine in chapters, it's also a broad topic but I should be able to do it. -
Extended Project
Hi, I'm really sorry if this is in the wrong place but I have a few things to ask about the EP.
I'm thinking of taking it up next year but I'm a little stuck for titles. I did think of doing something like 'Is Harry Potter a Christian Allegory?' which would be enjoyable and something I know a fair bit about but would that kind of thing be accepted? Any other ideas for titles?
Thanks! -
Re: Extended Project
tbf as long as you can make it academic or relevant or whatever your allowed. i mean my friend did a 5000 word essay on jewellry making.
I did mine on healthcare but it's really up to your assessor to decide. you just have to justify it and you dont have to come up with a final title until the end
).
