He is mad.
She is mad.
They are mad.

'They' is when more than one person is mad, in my example.
But why do people refer to themselves as 'they'.

I know its a preference, but why?

Basic answer: As you said before, freedom of choice.

General Answer: Gender Dysphoria.

My answer: First of all, have you Googled this at all?

Also, one does not in fact wake up and decide this. It requires a fully thought-out rationale.

Read this Article as homework

That's all for now.

Ouh, you replied to something I was saying to someone else so I mistook you for the other person lol.

Disregarding more specific time frame... The point is that over time the English language had indeed evolved. Yet you're arguing that it's natural to use a near millennia old practice and that it justifies the use of they/them? It doesn't make too much sense to me.

Of course in some cases this is the case as in the example "They left their coat" But that only applies to when the person in question is unknown. If the speaker knows the person then they could alternatively change the address "Mike left his coat" or "Mike? Yeah he left his coat" once the person in question is known then there is know need for the "singular they".. which is also an exception, which the norm is the "plural they"

It’s not being used as a justification. The reason it’s brought up that the singular they has existed for centuries and native speakers of English use it all the time, is to refute the notion that someone (a singular person) who wants their pronoun to be “they” is some radical new thing that is destroying language or something. It isn’t because we use “they” all the time to refer to a single person. I just don’t see what the big issue is, chances are you’ll never actually encounter someone who asks to be called they and it just seems pointless for some people to get so wound up over something so minor.

Nope, they say they're a they. Not they are a they. Big difference

not quite sure what you’re trying to say here.
