How does the “gift year” from student finance work?

For example- I interrupted two weeks into second year after I got my first maintenance loan payment and that money has been taken out of my loan for this year (so I get a third less than what I would’ve had if I’d finished second year the first time). Does that count as using my extra year? If I were to retake a year would I still be able to get student finance?
