April is Stress Awareness Month

Stress affects all of us at many different points in our life and might be something you will experience while studying at University. Stress can be brought on for many different reasons, such moving away from home for the first time, concerns about making friends or how to manage your studies.

Stress can manifest itself emotionally and physically, so it’s good to be aware of the signs of stress. We’ve listed a few examples below:

A change on your emotions

Feeling overwhelmed, angry or scared

A change in your behaviour

Not wanting to see friends or be sociable. A change to your eating habits or alcohol consumption

Physical symptoms

Headaches, dizziness, nausea

At The University of Brighton we take our students and staff wellbeing seriously and have many different support systems in place to help you manage with stress.

Student Support and Guidance Tutors (SSGTs)

Our SSGTs are part of our Student Wellbeing team. They will listen to your concerns and find out how things are affecting you. They will then talk through different options with you and may direct you to specialist services across the university as well as the support available locally, such as our counselling services.

Student Residential Adviser

Student Residential Advisers (SRAs) are senior students who live and work in the halls. They provide student-to-student support and regularly to see if you are okay. They provide information and advice, and let you know about any social activities they are organising in halls.

Healthy Eating Guide

Eating well makes a big different to your overall health, including mental health, which will improve your stress levels. We’ve created a healthy eating guide for our students, to eat healthy while on a budget. The guide has lots of helpful tips and ideas!

Keeping Active

Keeping active and socialising also has a huge impact on your health and can help you manage stress.

Our Student Union have a huge number of societies you can join to make friends, meet people with the same interests as you and try different activities.

Our SportBrighton offers members masses of opportunity to participate in sport. Whether it is purely for fun, to improve your fitness, make lasting friendships or to take part in serious competition.

Self Help Guides

The University of Brighton also has lots of self help guides, such as Combating Stress through Relaxation, Stress Management and Managing homesickness plus many more!

As a student at The University of Brighton you will find lots of support in place and we will always aim to help you achieve your goals and aid you with any issues, stresses or concerns you may be facing.

We hope this was helpful and we wish you all the best with your applications and studies!
