Passport Application

I am applying for a passport and obviously you need to provide your parents details. It asks if my mother has a passport, which she does however it expire around 10-20 years ago. Is this still able to be used for my application or will I need to send my mother's birth certificate instead?
Usually for passport applications you need an in date passport
It depends where the passport was issued? Was it UK?

I agree with @Kutie Karen

I applied for a passport last year, and kept a copy of the application form. There's nothing on there to indicate that it needs to be a current passport. I also found what appears to be the current guidance notes at https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1116891/09.22_Guidance_Booklet_IND.pdf and that doesn't say anything helpful.

I think the purpose of this section of the form is to verify your parents' information with a view to ascertaining their citizenship and hence your entitlement to a British passport. So it should be fine to put down your mother's expired passport details -- they'll be able to cross-reference that against their records.
