Leeds vs Sheffield vs York chemistry

How does Leeds chemistry compare to Sheffield and York? Any experiences? I’m just really indecisive on which of the 3 I should firm and put as my insurance choice (and the deadline is on the 8th June 🥲)

Do any of these courses have a placement opportunity? This would add enormously to your graduate job chances.

The offer grades should tell you what is logical to pick as your Firm choice (higher) and Insurance (lower).

All are great units, highly regarded and all are great student cities. York is probably the quieter one of the three. Have a look at the chemistry courses to help you decide. For example, the core subjects are Organic, Inorganic and Physical chemistry. Ok for year 1 but can you specialise in years 2 and 3? If physical chemistry floats your boat, do you have the option to drop or minimise the organic and inorganic modules to focus on physical chemistry?

Also, what are the electives available to you? I studied chemistry at Liverpool and loved the electives more than the core subjects. I studied oceanography and biochemistry as electives.

Hehe well... They all have placement options and are all AAB offers (only York says it needs an A in chem tho).

I don't do chemistry but one big difference with the unis is that York is a campus uni and away from the city centre whereas Sheffield and Leeds are both city unis, which would you prefer/have you been to any?

For me, Sheffield and Leeds have the best optional modules followed by York. I’ve only visited York before and it is a really cute city. From what I’ve seen on YT, Sheffield looks good too but I haven’t seen much of Leeds. I don’t believe any of the courses offer a narrowing to the physical side but that’s ok for me because I enjoy more areas of chemistry than I used to (tho Sheffield does have a space chemistry optional module and Leeds has engineering physics optional module!) :colone:

I really like York, however I haven’t been to Sheffield and Leeds. What I really like about York was how cosy and lively it felt. The only drawback is that the uni is a bit far away from the centre (good exercise though )

if you like it being a campus then York sounds brilliant!! at the end of the day you can't make a bad decision as all 3 are very good unis (im going to Sheffield in September), good luck

I don’t know about the chemistry side of the universities but as somebody who’s visited all 3 unis, sheffield was by far my favourite.

Despite the fact sheffield is a city uni, you can still get the “cosy” feeling in their student accommodation ranmoor/endcliffe since they’re student villages and about a 20 minute walk from the actual city campus. So in a sense you get the best of both worlds at Sheffield I’d say.

York is also nice since it’s a campus and everything is together, again it was about a 20/30 minute walk into the centre? Which isn’t too bad.

Leeds is probably my least favourite since it’s a city uni but kinda out of the way from the actual centre, I also didn’t like the feel of it as a whole.

If you have any questions though about the cities/unis feel free to ask since I've regularly visited all of them! I’m just no help for the course side as I’ve applied for engineering

Thank you, I’ve ruled Leeds out partly for this reason. Now I have to choose which way round I put Sheffield and York! I think I might be leaning more towards Sheffield as I like the course better but I’m gonna do a bit more research before I commit myself
